In America we have low taxes but not choice. You can choose to drive in America but you cannot choose to ride the high speed rail instead. Our choices are limited by our regime.

Tesla fans seem to believe this very very strongly. Do you get a massive mobile bill from your car? Does your car have a huge storage device in the trunk? Does it upload 50GB of data over your wifi every time you park it in your garage?

The post specifically mentions that these things are not vulnerable to attack from WebGL, because you can't reach the APIs in question just by drawing.

Last time I went to downtown SJ it certainly did seem depressed. I just wanted to see what was going on so I took an Uber down there. At St. James Park I saw some drunks fighting, and cops trying to separate them. Nearby was an encampmen

You do not have an expectation of privacy while operating a vehicle upon the public highway. That is why your car has a giant number plate on it, why you must carry and present a license to operate said vehicle, and why you provide implied

I'm used to reading inaccurate descriptions of Google and Googlers in the press, so I wasn't surprised by this from the article: "... be usable as a single database for Google’s developers, who could care less about how a dat

Sacramento will inevitably be destroyed without warning when an earthquake strikes Folsom. Folsom dam is basically a trade where Sacramento gains temporary flood relief in exchange for a certainty of being wiped out by the instrument of th

It's difficult to describe the hydrological situation of Yuba City and Marysville to people who have never been there. The rivers run through the towns way up above the street level, owing to mining debris washed down from the mountai

I'm not sure where the snow is but it's not at 5000' in Plumas County this year. The ski and snowmobile club in La Porte is closed for lack of snow.

NOAA has nationwide river sensor and guidance data if you are interested in a river near you. https://water.weather.gov/ahps/forecasts.php

Indeed. If we want to leave the analysis to professionals we would look at the CDEC river guidance for the Feather above the dam. Here it is. http://cdec.water.ca.gov/guidance_plots/MFP_gp.html As you see the forecast

Wow almost every statement here is wrong. #1: the dam is managed in the winter about 1 million acre feet below the top, for flood control purposes. The spillway has been operating all winter long. #2: The operator cannot decide to use the e

You did not ever own your own globally consistent, massively scalable, replicated database. The fact that you can now rent one by the hour is strictly an improvement for you, if you need that kind of thing.

Capitol Corridor improvements from Richmond to San Jose are something that could be done right now to dramatically improve transportation in the region. And all we need to do is nationalize the UPRR. Who would complain, really?

I don't fall for your both-sides-do-it framing. Fact is that the other side had power and didn't do it. Now we have insane cheetoh in office and we're getting insane cheetoh policy ideas. This is not a matter of equivalence.

Indeed, "blacklisted for leaving Google" seems pretty far-fetched. In reality people who leave Google with reasonable performance ratings have the option to return within 6 months after they leave.

You don't have to go to Utah to beat that. My mortgage on a SFH in Oakland is $2350/mo, I have 1800 sq ft and a garage and a big yard.

This is commonly stated but not true under all conditions. The full-blown GMail UI has extensive latency-hiding capabilities. The basic HTML UI has no latency-hiding features of any kind. If you are on a high-latency connection but you h
