You can run window managers just fine with X on windows. I use i3 and bspwm on my surface almost anytime I turn that machine on (I have other Linux laptops I use as well and the config is one rsync away usually). Just be sure that whichever

Given that their 1-socket 32c EPYC part (7551P) for $2300, I'd guess it'll be cheaper than 2k unless they can show the two nodes (half the chip) lacking direct memory channel access won't have a problem being fed data.

I really like how he uses the term "symbolic leisure" here. It makes a good point about what work-places are and how we convince ourselves that it's something else by mixing other symbolic elements into the space. It's a

I was curious about this claim so I looked some numbers up. The latest A11 chip has 8MiB of L2 cache. I could only find a small handful of xeon models with 6MiB of cache while almost all of them contain equal or greater amounts of L2 cache.

I’ve found this tool indispensable on my Linux devices. The configuration is a simple but obvious language which makes it easy to get something working. I usually boot this with my .xinitrc.

Hey HN. I'm the author of this post. This post is a starting point for helping people experiment with Wallaroo. I'd be happy to answer questions or discuss some of the ideas that went into this specific project.

I believe the x201 was from 2010. I can add that I can't use alacritty on my x201 for this reason as well. I've stuck with st since I find it easy to customize (Xresources seems to require scanning lots of documentation vs just a

I mean that you need something more than 100px wide. So it cuts into the page space more aggressively. It’s a good use of space but unfortunately most designs do not account for this very well in my experience.

Good point. I tend to use folders so on a bar they’d be a menu that would hide and then show. But for things like reading lists where I want something linear and present, the sidebar is nice.

The big problem I have started seeing is web design assuming you always browse using a maximized window. Combine this with a prevalent market of wide screens and most sites won’t look right without at least 1200px. So once you put anything

I think you mean conhost (cmd is the shell program, not the terminal). It does have it's rough edges but it's much improved from where it was only a few years ago and its far from the only way to host a WSL session. This includes

I've never tested this for obvious reasons but when that pencil is sticking out of the lightning port during charging, it looks awfully vulnerable. Damaging the pencil is one thing but breaking the port on the iPad itself is another.

cmd.exe is more like bash and less like xterm or the like. conhost.exe is likely what you're thinking of. I don't mind the minimalism but there are a few nice adjustments that can be made from the defaults like turning on vt100 su

Partisan builds upon HyParView for membership which seems to address many of the issues with connection scaling over fully connected meshes (section 3.3.4). It'd be interesting to see these benchmarks run with various faults injected.
