Making functions that must be called in a specific, pre-defined order is the problem. Forcing it to be done correctly through the type system is a neat trick, but better is to design it so the trick wasn’t needed in the first place.

> where I need to make sure certain functions are called in order The ticket approach is a neat way to handle this, but I’ve always felt that functions needing to be called in a specific order is usually a bad code smell. I’m sure ther

I thought the narrative was that it was the blue cities that were the chaotic hellholes, specifically because of all the minorities that live there? Can you try to keep your stories straight?

No one is saying we shouldn’t work to improve the safety of multiple systems at a time. But it is helpful to keep perspective over relative safety. People are very prone to overweight the risk of things that are prominent in the media.

I’ll never not be bitter than Python “won” the scripting language war over Ruby, more or less just because someone did a bit of AI work in it first and it took over that space by default. Ruby has such a nice holistic consistency to it. Wit

Frankly I think expressing it in Celsius has made Americans think it’s less of a problem than it is. It took me awhile to realize that it’s basically 4°F, which is enormous.

The Republican base doesn’t give a shit about “tax and spend” either. For all their hand-wringing about deficit spending, Republican administrations have for decades been the party of excessive spending and ballooning deficits. They’ve demo

Independent of the merits of this case, is there legally a distinction between deleting a secret key that decrypts an encrypted blob (maybe not spoilage?) vs writing over the blob itself (spoilage?). I could see arguments for both, either

In other words, “the point of a system is what it does” applies to humans as well.

Given that the Republicans claim to be the “party of personal responsibility”, I utterly reject this attempt to frame its voters as the poor and unfortunate victims of manipulation and choose instead to hold them personally responsible.

Edited this after the fact to reduce the intensity of my tone. This “both sides” nonsense is not particularly convincing when one party literally has masked goons on the street sending people extrajudicially to concentration camps.

Conservative voters themselves have been quite clear that they don’t actually care about any of those principles either. I remain skeptical.

> the technology is already fully paid for by the user This seems like a very large and unfounded assumption on your part, particularly in a world where we no longer pay for Apple operating systems or their updates.

Buying my cables from decent manufacturers does not tell me what specific version of USB a cable purports to support, what voltage of USB-PD it can transmit, whether or not it can do Thunderbolt or DisplayPort, or a dozen other random capab

The original point was that go is not a Pareto-optimal choice along any set of language criteria. "I didn't feel like choosing $LANG's competitors, so I went with $LANG" might be how languages are chosen for projects in

Exactly. Writing code is easy. Junior developers do it all the time. Hell, they write far mode code and do it faster! I go half the speed of a junior developer, but the code I write lasts five years to a decade with an order of magnitud

USB-C is a physical connector layout. The full cable that is between the two connector ends has an enormous matrix of specifications it can support. There are variations of bandwidth, power delivery (or not), Thunderbolt versions (or not),
