From a consumer's point of view, yes, that's true. It's easy to switch to a different email provider or a different search engine. From an advertiser's point of view, that is just not the case. Advertisers are forced to use Google, because

Agreed. I think most universities would rather err on the side of CS, lest they be construed as something like a trade school. Unfortunately, that doesn't mesh well with the reality that the majority of students will go into software engine

I've never really felt it was that different, but for the sake of discussion, how would you simulate the non-social variety of stress in a hiring situation?

I often hear people assert that engineering isn't done under pressure, so an interviewee's performance under pressure doesn't matter. I don't think that's necessarily true: lots of systems have to be designed for life-and-death situations,

I think you mean 0.7% of people, which is not necessarily a small market. Developing a sophisticated consumer electronics product like the iphone may be expensive, but developing a few software apps for it isn't necessarily, especially if y

Wow, this article paints jailbreaking in a horrible light. The vulnerable devices are phones where the owner has enabled remote ssh access and left the root password as the default. There's a reason it's called the "Duh" virus.

Even if this was proven as fair use, it would be quite difficult to make a usable search engine that didn't present at least some of the content back for public consumption. Imagine if Google search results just had a bunch of links that sa

This article could be written much less offensively as, "The appcache in iPhone OS > 2.1 means web apps don't have to be second-class citizens." As it is, it makes some strong assertions but fails to actually educate developers. That sa

Not that I support the change, but this headline seems very presumptuous. Is there actually any evidence that they're imposing "tracking cookies"?
