I think the productivity increase is more than the time saved waiting for stuff to load. That few seconds pause can be enough to interrupt my flow, at which point I think, 'hmmm, let's check out HN while I wait for that'. Of course, by th

Would you change your mind now? I decided on Monday to buy an Android phone (HTC Desire), but haven't got around to going to the store yet.

I've got around this in the past by importing the bizarrely named files into iTunes and then telling it to automatically organise my library for me. It then uses the metadata in the mp3s to rename the files back to how they should be. Not

This is in spite of the fact that the Android phone sales are apparently equal the number of iPhones phone sales. From what I understand, Android sales are currently similar to iPhone sales (in the US) in terms of phones being sold today,

Maybe make the desktop application open source? That may remove a lot of the headache for you if you can find a keen customer to develop/support it. Good luck taking on mapmyride. Mapmyrun (the runner's equivalent) has got worse and worse

IMO it has always been Office that has been the key to MS dominance I completely agree. Excel is the thing that keeps me tied to Windows (and no, the Mac version of Excel isn't the same). It is by far the best software I have used for sm

There was a lot of noise about that, but in reality the internet "filtering" proposals have not (yet) been enacted and thanks to the latest election result look pretty much guaranteed to be unpassable now.

Don't start with the professors - start at the bottom and work up. Find a large-ish existing community of PhD students (e.g. all students at a certain lab) and build up from there.

Mendeley has been mentioned a few times already. I'll just point out that it has some kind of API. I have no idea what it enables, I've been meaning to look into it, but it might be useful in terms of getting citation information for new

That depends on my starting weight. If I weigh 120lbs then I'll take the muscle. If I weigh 220lbs then I'll take the weight loss.

I highly recommend the Mars trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson. It's fiction, so the science is suspect in places, but it raises a lot of fascinating issues - the main one being that the science and engineering behind keeping Martian settlers

Even considering YC companies, who's to say how many would have succeeded anyway? There's no control, so no experiment. I guess you could look at rejected applicants as a sort of control group (not perfect though)? How many of those have

I don't completely agree with your 5th point. By the same argument, auto manufacturers make a profit, so don't buy a ready made car - you can make it cheaper yourself! (Maybe the part about auto manufacturers making a profit is a bit shak

It's interesting how the calculation is quite sensitive to your initial capital - if you start with 6.2 million then at age 70 you have about 4 million remaining. Which you then burn through in the next 7 years.
