I do exactly this. Make lentil soup in the crock pot on Sunday's for lunch all week. I got the prep time down to <30 minutes (before coffee).

Having grown up in the NYC media market, it's a lot better now than it was in the late 80's/early 90's when there were a few murders per day. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crime_in_New_York_City In 1990 there were 2245 homicides, 4x more t

Same here. My Rev. A core duo MBP gets about the same, 1.5 hours. Problem is that once the battery hits 20% capacity it will shutdown the machine at any moment.

I went to Lowes and picked up two pieces of melamine whiteboard (3'x4') for $9/each, some mirror hangers (another $2), and drywall anchors ($1). My home office now has a rather huge, expandable whiteboard for under $25. I then 'persist' th

that's kind of what I do: since I work at about 25% capacity most of the time I'm learning the inner guts and glory of ruby for projects outside of work.

We're limited to what we can do/use by the technical depth/breadth of the 'architects' (mid-level devs at best) that we have. Pretty much limits us to java 1.4 and earlier and libs that have been open source for at least a decade. I'd writ

hiring duds also leads to hiring more duds once work ramps up and the current set of duds can't handle it. Rinse, lather, repeat...

+1 And try to surround yourself with other developers who share that passion and drive. Nothing kills motivation than working with folks who view software development as an easy paycheck.

Not very. My paid job is typical enterprisey CRUD apps in java. Most of the work comes from fixing others mistakes and battling with poor decisions around what tools we use (ClearCase?!?!, a good 1+ hours/day wasted there). I'm more prod

Everytime I hear about a 60 year old losing their 401(k) because of the stock market crash I refuse to feel for them. Why were they so equity-heavy at that age when having cash/fixed income assets would be safer? They either didn't know o

As a three-time ironman finisher (Wisconsin '04, Lake Placid '06/'08) this is spot on. The key is long, slow, boring training, keeping your eyes glued to your HRM to stay <zone 4. It's also why a lot of first time ironman racers don't
