Anyone who can build and market this kind of system would want way more than 5%.

> What the moderators see is already after the core platform has removed the most obvious offenders. This might be true. > Most of what the volunteer moderators do is remove content that they feel is not in line with their community.

That's not how network effects work. You can't win by cloning the software of an existing social network.

Forcing mods to be more accountable to the community at large can be a good thing. Given the pressure from revenue objectives, it will be hard for Reddit to identify and prioritize the right safeguards. Failure here would lead to a more hom

If we imagine, say, /r/funny as a Fediserver, it'll need to be ready for 8 figure MAU, if not 9. You make a good point about leverage.

When people disagree about the direction of a community, someone has to not get their way. There's no avoiding this in any group.

It's $3 today. What happens when Reddit triples the price with 30 day notice?

This doesn't work. It's not that people are making up their restaurant visits. It's that they are going to the restaurant, they had a good time, but they didn't disclose that they are close to the owner, and maybe they o

We will never have completely trustworthy user reviews. Reddit/HN quality is probably about as good as it gets. Many small businesses get their viral loop started from glowing reviews from family and friends. That sort of growth hack w

Some users think "this platform is so good, it doesn't need moderation." Somehow it never occurs to them that unmoderated platforms end up at best like 4chan and at worst like a site that gets shut down by the FBI.

The pressure required for a fountain pen is much less than that of a ballpoint pen. Your nib just glides over the paper and ink comes out. That's what makes fountain pens more ergonomic than other pens.

The tradeoff is that it rewards you for doing the right thing- less hand strain, prettier ink, more lightfastness if you pick the right inks.

The Pilot Varsity is very good value. I bought a fancy TWSBI with different inks only to discover that my favorite ink was the Pilot Varsity blue. So now I just use the Varsity.

What's wrong with FB groups? It's almost as good at surfacing good stuff as Reddit for my niche interests and it has a lot of buy/sell/trade activity that never makes it to eBay or Reddit.

If you've ever moderated a large subreddit before, you would know that it's not self-moderating. Garbage comments attract more garbage comments, and pretty soon your userbase is toxic as everyone else who's looking for a civi

People are so cynical on HN lol- see my sibling comment. I like Internet communities and am willing to volunteer some time to help some be more successful.

Can confirm as a subreddit mod. The day to day is mostly deciding whether borderline comments should be removed and whether a post contains too much self-promotion.
