"The author charitably attributes the inability for such a system to be energy neutral to "engineering problems," but I think it's pretty clear that there are also physical laws that make this impossible." Why not just use a electromagnetic

This article describes any easy way to do this incorrectly. It also has simple spelling errors, such as 'weather' for 'whether'. It is NOT what I've come to expect from HN. Downvotes for everyone involved. Oh. Right. I can't downvote. D

I don't think it matters if Nintendo approves. There is a ton of 'homebrew' for the NES that contains no proprietary Nintendo code, and I doubt that any part of the 'hardware' being emulated is protected intellectual property. A case can e

1. Why would you say it is 'unfair' of me to be able to decide who gets the benefit of my lifes work when I pass on? That's the rational. I earned it, so I decide who gets it. Usually my kids. YMMV from country to country, and state to sta

If you want real time streaming, you can sign up for tdameritrade, and then request API access. It's free, and decent quality. The interface is RESTful, but the data is a funky binary format that's hard to parse without the documentation t

Me too, and I was only on the free version. After trying to copy a couple of thousand tiny text files, I had to force kill explorer repeatedly until I gave up and uninstalled Dropbox. In the end I just signed up for a $9.99 a year hosting

Peter Thiel (Paypal cofounder) has a net worth of 1.3 billion, which is a hell of a lot more than 100 million. He has already said he believes in the concept and donated money to the 'seasteading institute'. Obviously either it isn't worth

None of those steps are actually 'non-trivial'. My statement was meant to be sort of tongue-in-cheek. It's a true statement. It's also a gross over simplification. This method has worked for me in the past, especially on the internet. Outs

Sort of. I built the business, but it got litigated away from me. Last valuation of it though was several million dollars. Now I'm starting over, and I'll do it again.

Is that a quote from something? I remember back in grade school when I asked my Mom what the penalty for not paying taxes was "Do they take you to jail or something?", and this simple fact dawned on me and me mother simultaneously.

The easiest way is to simply find a way to make one dollar (anyone can make one lousy dollar), find a way to automate that (hire people, code something, yadda), and repeat a million times (assuming the original process is scalable). Simple

You posted a comment about your enjoyment of the authors failure, and judged his time management skills due to the fact that he posted his rant about another persons failure on the internet. Do you not see the hypocrisy?

I've thought that kademlia or some other DHT would be the ideal solution to this. Think newsgroup/forum style conversational threading, with a separate data channel for large transfers, and landgrab DNS based on popularity.

The author seems not to understand that robots.txt is granular, and that Google even honors the X-Robots 'header' version. ACAP is pointless, or at least not the big deal improvement these guys want it to be.

I'm not sure about the concept of a 'work week' either, but it's plain to me that the dichotomy of work vs life is a useful one. Anyone who has ever worked from home is probably aware of how much less productive they are without creating c
