PHP is a terrible language in which you can easily write code that will run basically anywhere. There are many cases (i.e. open source web apps) where the value of the latter vastly outweighs the former, but it's not going to be true for ev

I thought not having a TV at all was the new status symbol. Mine isn't plugged into an aerial (just an HTPC) so I guess I'm half-hipster.

I went to a high school of >2500 in New Zealand and I found that with so many other people it was easy to find others that were like-minded. I'm sure some people were bullied but to me it barely registered - nothing at all like it's dep

I don't get it. Do people give you shit for not drinking when you go to events? I've never had any problem when I decide I don't feel like drinking that day. You say you don't want to tell people what to do, but you want them to stop drinki

I believe OP was meaning that the storage requirements for compressed video are already increasing at a huge rate, and it's exacerbated if you are working with uncompressed video

I'm a web developer, so while security is obviously a huge concern, it's not my main area of expertise. I don't have the knowledge to evaluate the pros and cons of each cipher, and the situations in which it's appropriate to use each one. I

There's only 2 connections to the USA at the moment, and SCC charges monopoly prices. There is another AU<>NZ<>USA connection being built in 2014 and another AU<>NZ connection built in 2013 (the 2 grey lines). Southe

A similar thing happened in New Zealand (and likely elsewhere) in the late 90's, before broadband became prevalent. There were a number of ISP's who provided free dial-up internet, because they made money from termination fees when the majo

I quite like DDG but from my region (NZ) it's just too slow compared to Google. I look forward to when you're big enough to have datacentres in Auckland or even Sydney.

I think buying a car on credit may be an American thing - at least I don't know of anyone who has bought a car on credit. It seems like an absurd waste of money to do so - why not just buy a secondhand car you can afford outright?

And here's information on how increasing speed increases conversion: http://radar.oreilly.com/2009/07/velocity-making-your-site-f... So potentially, the money you save by hosting overseas is lost in lower conversion.

Here's a post by someone in AU demonstrating the effects of latency on web traffic - 10x slowdown. http://mike.bailey.net.au/2010/07/latency-is-a-killer/

I'm actually in NZ, it might be different in AU, but generally when you buy colocation here you only pay for international bandwidth; national bandwidth is free.

It may just be that hosting overseas is inappropriate for a local audience - a connection to the USA is far slower than a connection in the same city. For example, from my work on a fibre connection, pinging a local website takes about 2ms,

It means you know where the plane is going to be before it gets there, if you didn't already know. As in, you're planning ahead, rather than reacting to what's happening. Which I would imagine takes a lot of experience at 1900 knots.

NZ has expensive (and not particularly fast) internet, which is probably why. On the other hand, setting up a limited-liability company took me an hour (including registering for GST) and cost $40 when I did it (it's a little more now), and
