The concept is a huge surge in traffic. It still amazes me that the most worthless of sites can effortlessly surpass the traffic of good ones with a couple easy press releases.

database tables are a flat list, but that doesn't mean that the they aren't organized. I usually search my flat list of bookmarks chronologically and by searching for some keywords.

Indeed, databases are real root of all performance problems. I rewrote a site to use the database much less frequently (mostly just for the initial loading and write operations) and I've been incredibly satisfied with the results.

Maybe the approach is to create a FRIEND PROXY SITE that abstracts your social network above social sites? Really, that seems to miss the point. If all you want is to know who your friends are then you wouldn't need any website at all.
