When I switched from Amiga to Linux in 1995 I thought that I will have a perfect NeXTSTEP clone within a few months. I saw pictures of GNUStep and it looked nearly ready to go. Ha!

What I don't understand: Why do they promote the software instead of the protocols? News and e-mail had different server software and clients and were both used around the world. Mastodon uses standard protocols, too.
