Really interesting to see the various examples/incarnations the author went through to illustrate his point. Very well done. I must admit I like his aphorism: "If you're honest while making your code better, you will inevitab

I've wanted to use "SQLite db per user" for awhile now but haven't had the right problem domain for it yet. https://engineering.backtrace.io/2021-12-02-verneuil-s3-back... looks really interesting.

We have a "write tachyons/tailwinds CSS-in-TypeScript" project [1] that can sit on top of any CSS-in-JS runtime (emotion and fela are both supported). I'm hoping to eventually find one of these build-time CSS-in-JS frame

Don't want to take away from Tailwind, it's great. That said, self-promotion disclaimer but if you like inline/utility CSS, and also like TypeScript/React/Emotion, we've got a "Tailwinds-ish" CSS-in-J

I know trackpads won, but would love a trackpoint. I keep buying Thinkpads solely for that feature.

Fwiw would throw in a feature request for wall-time based profiling / tracing. A lot of times in micro-services, performance issues are making many/slow I/O calls, and that doesn't really show up on a CPU-based profile.

A late reply here, but fwiw I want to buy a strength machine with: * Your electric resistance motors * Weaker concentric than eccentric movement (forced negatives) * In a precor chassis * With no screens or TVs, just an embedded controller

That's amazing (both the article and the project)! I want exactly that but a) for postgres and b) written in javascript/node so I can use it for in-process access while running test suites. I know they speak mysql as a wire protoc

Defer to the other replies pointing out this is against services and not individuals, but I think "the populace wishes for free content, government please make it so" is fairly naive. It requires money to produce good content, and

The test running in a transaction would mean my external tools like psql/etc would not be able to see the data b/c it's uncommitted, even if I pause/catch the test before it finishes.

Fwiw I personally find this approach very frustrating, b/c when a test fails, all of the test data is gone, so I can't open psql/mysql CLI and look at "what did the data actually look like". Granted, there are pros&

Interesting, this is essentially a record/reply framework at the db driver level. Usually I think record/reply testing is an anti-pattern b/c it's typically used against external systems (i.e. REST/RPC API calls) wh

True! Good point and clarification. The nice aspect of pg-structure for me was getting all of that information_schema goodness already pulled out into hashes/DTOs from a 1-line "await pgStructure(...)" call. I.e. w/o pg-

Fwiw I never really got this approach to caching b/c the keys are always based on calling the db, and calling the db is usually what you're specifically trying to avoid with caching, not just the transform of db content to json&#x

Wow. That is a great write-up. I was admittedly skeptical of "writing your own cache" but these guys are super-OCD and obviously capable of producing best-in-class implementations. Kudos. ...kind of wondering, they had so at least
