Usually it works without problems. Check with the mainboard manufacturer if it supports ECC memory. Most do, some don't.

At my workplace when I ask about why some process parameters are this way it usually leads to a dead end where the people who know are long gone and those who should know don't know the essentials. Everything is kind of interconnected
