Yeah, I try to align tech debt cleanup with 'touch points', since that's generally an indicator that the code needs work done on it anyway. It's sometimes controversial to say "We should not prioritize tech debt&quo

This is central to Fowler's point, which is that technical debt only needs to be paid off if it gets "activated" a lot - this is where the metaphor breaks down, because typical debt accrues over time. If you never touch code

Every time a new language is posted on HN I spend ~15 seconds looking for code and, if I can not find it, I close the tab. I can't imagine that isn't the case for many others. I think Go nails this with the multiple code samples.

There's a book out there that points to my website. I wish they had just mirrored it. My website has been dead for a few months, and some O'Reilly book has a dead link.

Most Python code being written today is almost certainly Python 2. Or at least it's close. Google is still Py2 I believe, as is Dropbox. These are big Python shops. I write Python. I don't see an end in sight, yet. There is, howev

Well, it's not like they're hoping it will crash. Presumably they're hoping it won't . Wouldn't it be more irresponsible to deploy to every user without first testing it out?
8. 3938.▲
   by staticassertion 7y ago

I don't see the purpose. There seems to be an assumption that A/B testing is inherently bad, therefor should be opt-in. A/B testing is necessary for stable rollouts, that much seems self evident. So what is the evidence that

So when deploying changes it should just go to every single user with no incremental rollout?

Alright, I apologize for the tone. It's unnecessary to make something like this into a heated discussion. That said, the part I was referring to is: > The mere fact of such a thing being possible is a usability defect. On what basis

The national park service does this in NYC. It's a win win situation, goats eat the grass, and everyone gets to hang out with goats. The article paints this as unusual but if the NPS was doing this in NYC that seems unlikely? It was ov

Me too. I can't say one way or the other, I can only speak to what I perceive in my career. I believe I've made it this far, in part at least, due to the extra hours I've put in. I believe I'm a much better programmer fo

I agree - I think putting in the extra hours is way more important early on in your career. Eventually it isn't going to pay off the same way (though I think it still will, just less).

Sure, I would too. Interviews are mostly stupid. At small companies where you have more wild-west type procedures you can probably get away with saying "Github is good enough", but my experience is that even mid sized companies st

I don't think any company cares that much about your github. It almost always comes down to the interview. But programming in your free time will (likely) make you more effective in your job, garner recognition/ place you in a pro

I always want to tell people things like this, to take care of themselves and not overprioritize work. At the same time I've never done that and it's in large part why my career has gone so well. It's "OK" either

I disagree about the definition sliding. SOA is closer to "many small services", Microservices is SOA + a set of practices and patterns. You can do SOA and not be doing microservices. It sounds like what they did was attempt to sp

Cost is the easy answer - as with any optimization, I guess. It can also be really annoying sometimes to scale a monolith - a big one can have a lot of different parts like multiple threadpools/ database pools. One component hits a thr
