Actually with a few tweaks, this technology would be much simpler to use than Facebook, for a person like your grandma, simply because it removes that annoying registration process. You just open the installed app, and that's it. It&

Okay Hackernews, I get it. Scuttlebutt isn't fully ready for everything yet. I wrote that article hoping that it would sparkle interest to both use it, plus make it happen. This is not your usual startup launch, it's a community p

There is work underway to implement the protocol in Go, Rust, C and a bit of Haskell. Some of those are usable, but partially complete. There is no reason for the protocol to be restricted to JS and Electron.

It's a protocol, not a product. Just make a new product that uses the protocol and there you go, a new name.

The GDPR argument is a bit moot because Scuttlebutt is no different than sharing pictures in gossip style (a.k.a. memes). If one of your childhood pictures happens to become the new meme, there's little hope that GDPR enforcement would

Public servers were a temporary hack and nowadays most of the community is putting their public servers down. It's not a good idea for scaling, but above all, public servers connect you with strangers , which is basically undesired fo

That's just now. It's evolving fast, and two new developments will improve the onboarding problem: WebRTC-based invites, and connecting p2p to friends through a DHT (Kademlia).

So far no Facebook employee has answered this thread (unless they did so between the lines). Considering that Facebook has 25k employees, this must mean they have some very harsh policy on keeping quiet. Either that, or a strong culture tha

Hi, I'm andrestaltz who Elon answered on Twitter. Like others have mentioned here, it seems like Elon is referring to the link layer between the satellites. "Peer-to-peer" probably meant "without a network switch".

The article is okay, but I'm disappointed about a lack of larger big-picture thinking. It assumes (instead of questioning) that we will live in cities or often visit cities. The internet economy already decentralized cities by making

OP here. I find more than 4 hops impracticable. That's not what I was suggesting in the article. I suggested (probably not clearly enough) three ways meshes can be efficient: (1) local-first social networking where the use case is &quo

It's hard to imagine how things could be different, but for many services you don't need a middleman. For a long time, banking was thought to be a necessary middleman because you "have to" trust at least some actor to ve

Good observations about the need for the Internet to handle long-distances. I wrote on scuttlebutt that telecommunication channels could become multi-modal like public transportation is often in Europe: https://viewer.scuttlebot.
