I've tried using few pieces of paper tied by strong paperclip. Doesn't work for me - I've lost some notes that way. For me notebook as temporary information storage is better.

I use rsnapshot from cron to external USB drive encrypted with luks. I swap the drive with similar one weekly and store it offsite.

Try spacemacs [0]. Emacs with IMHO better keybindings, lots of integrated packages which can be switched on/off as functionally related "layers". For vim users has of course evil package. [0] http://spacemacs.org&#
