While I wholeheartedly agree with your sentiment, I wonder about the estimated figures. What’s the staff size of CS - could it be 10,000 top managers. Or 1,000 top managers but over ten years becomes ~5,000 if turnover averages at every 2nd

I once hacked a daily retail data polling script to simply make it carry out retries on failed polls. It succeeded about 80% of the time on retry. This saved me on avg about an hour a day of manually remoting into retail store systems to ga

Sorry but it’s as simple as a directive to the person who clicks “Pay Now” to not do that yet. A predictable part of compensation is being paid your regular wage on time and for many clients of SVB this is probably not possible this week co

This. There’s no need for all the cameras, and there’s certainly no need to keep the footage forever. Or offsite (cloud).

“An” issue with it is that we may come to rely on these AI’s outputs as assumed correctness or truth. If we have to double check everything they produce then that’s not great either.

But are the publicised rates correct - theyre based on a basket of goods, of which my understanding is, many standard items are not included. I think petrol might have been one? I’ve seen online estimates recently 3 or 4x what you’ve stated

This comment is gold. Another way to attack the problem is to educate end users. How do we convince Bob down the road that giving private information to corporations is a cause of some of our own problems? Usually I get retorts of condescen

I’d argue most are ignorant of it, or don’t understand, or are simply too busy with other things to care about knowing details of their apps.

Well it isn’t wages fuelling the inflation. Wages aren’t rising but our mortgage repayments certainly are!

Many people are not online all the time. Many people don’t want to share all of their data and would like to keep some local.

There is lock in it’s just more subtle than the IE situation. Have you seen the chromium codebase? It may be open source but no individuals or small teams would be able to manage a competing product, you’d need huge investment to compete. T

I use the syno app just fine. I setup a geo boundary so that if I’m at home it backs up - for my wife’s phone it just happens in the background, for me though I have to open the app for some reason… so I do it every week or so.

Speak with colleagues to understand how the business works - what is it’s core competency - service or product, and how does your company build and sell that. Then get a basis in accounting.

To further your point 1, I think also “Everyone sees things through their perspective”. So when you explain something, 10 people hear 10 slightly different things as their own experiences and biases, and even hopes, interpret your statement

Sadly I think everyone in the 00’s incorrectly assumed these companies having custody of our data didn’t equal them monitoring the data. The time has long passed since we should have left Google services if we care at all about privacy.

Individuals need better morals imo. The corporate entries of this works however do everything for the benefit of the share holder which isn’t always the right moral thing.

And in many cases YOU don’t actually choose - these ‘smart’ (read: stupid) algorithms infer what you want to see. I hate that. I think we will look back on this period in dunbfoundedness at what we allowed big tech to do.
