At some point, you're going to run into a piece of software that you can't use, or a piece of software that you can't change/play with. By using Ubuntu, kids can grow in any direction in terms of development, without run

I'm wondering, technically you're supposed to buy Sublime Text. Are you just running the (infinite) trial version of Sublime, are you purchasing a license for every laptop, or do you have some kind of sponsoring by the guy behind

Perhaps, though I have my doubts for many of them in the short term. Especially gaming: I'm a big fan of what Canvas and WebGL are doing and where things are going, but we're still not there. Regardless, the parent comment was tal

Nice list. Seems like they did a "major" reform around the turn of the century, many examples I've seen seem to be replacement around 1999/2000.

I grew up pretty much in the European countryside, and now live in the city. I'm sure there's some sort of "I want to live differently from my parents" mechanic at work.

I had to look up what a Piper Cub was, whereas I believe almost everyone knows what a Cessna looks like. It's only the most common air plane ever built.

You can get away with any old XMPP account, provided that your contacts are either on the same network or your network and theirs are federated. This used to be the case with GTalk, but sadly isn't anymore.

So, a minor spec bump and a minor price drop of a laptop is noteworthy enough to make it to the front page of HN?

Manually editing a json file is not what most users will do. Perhaps a more sensible default colour theme would be useful?

The lawsuit is moving forward, with Warner's motion to dismiss being denied. You can read about it at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Happy_Birthday_to_You#2013_law... and the cited links.

Minor nitpick: X32 is not "32-bit x86", it's an entirely different ABI[1], using 32-bit pointers but the (faster) 64-bit instructions. You're better of just calling it x86 to describe the 32-bit instruction set. I love t

I wonder if they'll be moving some of their other open (or shared) source projects to GitHub as well. Most of them are on CodePlex today.

I can't find any information right now, but I believe it statically compiles to Java bytecode, which means it can easily be dex'ed offline. It wouldn't make sense to not support Android in a JVM language of 2014, honestly.

I started this comment trying to explain how Civ was not like chess at all, but concluded that the two have much in common. There's an opening, where there are a few tried-and-true, well studied strategies, and the goal is to claim ter

May depend on whose citizens were on the plan, and who thinks they can benefit from joining in on the fun. I can't think of any nation powerful enough to rival Russia wanting to risk this level of conflict today though.

I've had this issue as well, but that was over a decade ago, when using a smaller brand (ECS) mainboard for an Athlon XP. Eventually it was discovered that the mainboard didn't support Corsair memory, and the shop traded me some K

USB 3.0 is pretty unlikely in a low-power embedded design though. I don't think I've seen any ARM boards with 3.0, and I don't think many of the low cost, high volume SoC manufacturers have integrated a USB 3.0 controller at

Isn't oil on canvas obsolete? Pixel art (and pixel-based graphics) may be obsolete in the sense that you no longer need to work within the constraints of large pixels making up an image. But content creation is still not vector based i

I'd put the USA pretty high on that list. They've implemented plenty of their take-downs over the past year, and are more capable of introducing something like this than any SEA state.

There is an integrated GPU, but it doesn't really compete with the APU's GPU. For the benchmarks, it has been augmented with a much more powerful Nvidia chip, taking thermal load away from the CPU/iGPU and freeing that space
