Passmark has, in my experience, been an excellent benchmark for predicting parallel compile times. They proved to be an almost perfectly linear predictor for instance for Android AOSP build times on various systems of mine. Haswell and now

This is brilliant. It reminds me of the old HP ScanJets, which came with SCSI commands to play musical notes[0] (someone at HP must have had too much free time on his hands ;)). Some videos of the scanners are at [1] and [2]. Another intere

As Nintendo supports Unity on the Wii U, this would have been a great project as a tutorial for indie Wii U devs. Now though, I can't see this as being acceptable for Nintendo.

Yes there is, it's called Signal[1], by the same developers. It started out as two separate products, but you can use them to chat between iOS and Android. [1]: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/signal-private-m

It depends on the client. TextSecure is an open-source XMPP/Jabber client for Android which does end-to-end encryption (OTR?), and adds contacts based on your address book automatically. It also supports adding a new contact by phone n

I've had pretty great repair service from Lenovo in January of this year, and with Acer in 2013. Both are for devices I purchased as a private consumer, not as a big contract corporate client. I've had some terrible experience wit

I think it's in part because 64-bit requires driver signing, and there are no funds for signing the coLinux64 driver.

Why does Microsoft still store temporary files on disk? (as opposed to a RAM-backed temporary file system as used in most other operating systems) Is there a reason for this? It just seems like it would cause clutter and garbage to pile up

This is brilliant! Much more light weight than a VM. I hope they can iron out the remaining kinks. I used coLinux many moons ago, but it hasn't been updated in any significant way lately, and still doesn't work on 64-bit Windows.

About your Acer Aspire remark: I've had some bad times with Acer in the past, and I bought a new one in January. Pretty good specs, low price, clean design, but very, very plasticky. Wouldn't call that a high quality alternative.

While many of us routinely spend this amount of money on laptops or other hardware, the average Joe doesn't want to spend more than 600-700 euro on a laptop (which translates to up to $650 in practice). So yes, for most people, this so

Depends on the laptop. I have bought two laptops in the past 14 months, a $2000 ThinkPad and a $600 Acer. Both came with 4GB soldered on and a single free SODIMM. (On a different note: the ThinkPad maxes out at 8GB and the Acer at 12GB, whe
