Video hosting is a solved problem, there are multiple mature and viable competing services. Creators use Youtube because of built-in discovery, community-building, and monetization services, which benefit much more from network effects and

Because corporations are not a natural entity and exist at the behest of society as a whole? If that means nothing to you then read the link. Literally killing your own customers to make the line go up isn’t a sound business strategy.

"Engagement" is the "paper clip maximizer"[1] of the modern software industry, or more generally an example of "instrumental convergence." Optimizing engagement without regard for negative externalities is a c

Community college is certainly a key part of the solution for students (we recommended many students pad out their non-major credits this way to save time/money), but for an academic with an R1 STEM PhD its unfortunately not a great mi

I have read many of Taibbi's past articles with enthusiasm and he makes some interesting arguments in the present article, but to be clear, he has an axe to grind on this very issue. He himself was essentially cancelled for some prett

HTTPS is critical yes. If hash(password) is sent over HTTP in plaintext, then hash(password) can just be used in a replay attack. You shouldn't be sending passwords in any form over unencrypted HTTP, and there isnt a clear case for ha

I wasn't there so I can't argue with your experience, but the fact that engineering is so heavily involved seems like the crux of the issue. These are fundamentally product and data management issues. Why would an engineer need

One goal of AI/ML for this kind of task is to discover a latent space of the source images, such that the “average” in that space is always a “valid” image (not splodge).
