When I wrote my book on Windows Azure for O'Reilly, they originally assigned me some bird which I hated. I wanted them to pick a pug or some dog (because Azure was originally code named 'Red Dog'). To my surprise, they hunted down a dog tha

[Disclaimer - I'm married to one of the founders so very biased :) ] I'm a huge fan of their approach. They're taking a hardcore CS approach (recommendation algorithms, machine learning, etc) to a space that rarely sees lots of tech appli

reposting my comment from that post I find the show distasteful but it is as accurate a portrayal of Silicon Valley as Jersey Shore is of that particular geo/demographic. In a way, this shows you how mainstream Silicon Valley now is - inste

If they weren't doing this, I would advocate firing whoever was running dev marketing/partnerships. MSFT needs to jump start its dev ecosystem and using its bank balance is one of the easier tools to deploy. Now I would love to know how muc

I'm an ex-Yahoo. I have friends there and have sympathy for how hard today must be. But I strongly think this is the right move for the company. They had way too many people, more than what they need/afford and were the cause of much overhe

I love how this story shows that all startup 'rules' can be broken. 1) The founders hadn't met/worked together before. 2) Neither of them have an engineering background, they outsourced all engineering/design to a remote team. There are man

An old patent years before they acquired Skype, one among thousands Microsoft files, doesn't mean that it has any plans of actually doing this. Sigh, tech press.

I do know of term sheet offers within 30 minutes. However, not for such a high valuation though. But it isn't outside the bounds of reality, especially during particularly 'frothy' times - like mid-last year.

Several execs have left. I think people at Yahoo have made peace with the situation or have a strong reason for staying there. I know some people who are there because they feel that the tech/scale they work on won't be possible at any othe

I was at MSFT and I used to hear the exact same thing - on it being used for defensive purposes. That changed in a hurry.

As an ex-employee of Yahoo, I find this sad and disappointing. Also - unnecessary. Yahoo still has great people, great userbase and great tech. No good can come out of this long term.

Don't know about KDE but I have the same problem with Unity. I wound up physically moving my monitors around because Unity really, really likes to be on the extreme left.

My issue with the active corners is that they are impossible to use with multiple monitors. Fitt's Law actively works against it; instead of being able to slam your mouse, you have to gingerly move it to the right spot.

I left Yahoo three weeks ago to do my own thing. There are lots of talented people at Yahoo - there are not too many companies which deal with the kind of scale and tech Yahoo does and a lot of people like that. Some of them have been there

Slightly tangential note - Square has the most gorgeous product videos I've seen from a startup. Their jobs section even lists an open position for doing these so I guess they do them in house. Very impressive.

I actually defend Github on that front too. Let's take the long view here - Github has a growing code base and this won't be the last 0-day exploit they face. Do they really want to signal any future person that they're ok with being broken

I'm sorry but I have to defend Egor here. Here's how you actually report a vulnerability, demonstrated by dfranke here on HN -> http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=639976 What Egor did was to violate sensible disclosure rules. He shou

This is not a white hat hacker does. A white hat would have contacted Github in private with a PoC done with a dummy account and a test repo. There is a reason responsible disclosure guidelines exist.

The Zuckerberg Washington Post(Graham) and Accel situation is one counter example - Zuckerberg walked away from a handshake deal and I suspect it didn't exactly hurt his reputation.

I have a bit of a history with SSL client certs; I'm the reason the Windows Azure management APIs all use SSL client certs for auth/security. Looking back, I think it's a bad idea. - Most developers don't understand them. - Library support
