I use but don't rely on bookmarks as I usually want to add some information when saving a reference. My tool of choice is Zotero [1] which I started using during researcher days and never looked back. If you organize your references in

The grep example should search for one character. Grep can skip bytes so that longer search strings are faster to search for. On my machine, I get from 22%-35% more time taken if I changed "grep blah" to "grep b".

Thus far, "properly" has been elusive - I.e. we know it when we see it, but not beforehand. It has been easier to instruct people to look at past concerns in similar projects and tick off which ones are relevant based on current

The note about DRY didn't sound like a mandate to ignore it entirely and "duplicate freely". As you said, duplication is a way to ratify that a common pattern exists first before putting something in place that captures the

Dad of two here. Good question. What I'm reading in your question that many replies are missing out on is that your question is less about the actual responsibilities, which I see you happy to take up. It is about what to do with your

While it is dishonest to claim credit for the Fiverr job, isn't it a smart thing to do? I mean if this person was in management instead and said "we can outsource this on Fiverr and save a ton of money instead of hiring these devs

I was curious about this post as I've come across a couple such cases in my own experience, though my interactions with them were not so deep. One thing we need to develop is the strength to not care about what the other person might t

I expect the same too. In a capitalist economy, companies need to market their products and they will always find a way to pay media companies for eye time. At the outset, I think fighting ads is. Lost cause though depending on the novelty

A few recommendations on this, since at where I work a talk is organized on this very topic today. 1. A great book that covers multiple paradigms of programming is Roy and Haridi's "Concepts, Techniques and Models of Computer Pro

A question - does it matter for webcrypto API's trustability to have window.crypto be redefinable to anything a piece of JavaScript code desires? (Ex: extensions) I find it hard to make any claims about safe local encryption using webc

It looks like what you're trying to say is that the difference between theory and practice is that in theory there isn't any but in practice there is. (Someone else said this, not me)

We could extrapolate this trajectory and take a page out of lisp history. Why don't we just let a "web page" be an s-expression delivered by http and run within a sandbox? If you look at what the racket team has done for thei

The REPL way of thinking may not be the right level for this kind of a system. I may be underestimating the complexity of this, but it does seem doable with some clarifications to concepts. For example, in the smalltalk world, every GUI obj

Neither of these do justice to the paradigm introduced by smalltalk. Both cases are lifting the least significant aspect of smalltalk - the single self-contained VM - and making it available within a browser. This is far from acceptable fro

Relatively little work on it in a long time. I think to bring smalltalk into the web world takes a different kind of think than a straight port to Js. The dev environment needs to seamlessly cover backend and frontend and be live editable.

Since word embeddings were the starting point, I'm wondering what would the impact be if they'd stretched the vector sequences to the same length using linear or whatever interpolation as opposed to zero padding the sentences.
