I am not Chinese. In fact we feel threatened by China. However, if China does come to occupy a majorly influential seat at the table it will not be the for the first time. The last time it did, it did not impose it's will beyond its

Death sentences worry me because they are irreversible and can be abused and they have been, see Pakistan, Bangladesh. At most, old Singapore style corporeal punishment added to the mix perhaps.

I want to believe this desperately, but from what I see (well, on YouTube videos, surveys and polls) it makes it very hard for me to do so. I still see massive endorsement from the not so well to do in the hinterlands. I will however grant

"Meddlesome" is certainly a light way of labeling torture training. What I find more troubling is that Trump has popular support. It's just not Trump. The rot goes far deeper.

Did that US really exist without a self imposed convenience of blindness ? The brutality of the School of Americas might indicate otherwise. Now rebranded as https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_Hemisphere_Institute_f.

I think learned wisdom has institutional memory of a few generations only, unless mythologized. Thus, some lessons need to be learned again and again. Some rights fought for again and again.

Yes that's a big part. The proofs get hairier otherwise. But I think there is more to it, the convergence to Gaussian also gets slower. In practice, we deal with finite averaging, so speed of convergence matters. For some non-iid case,

Consider a diagonalizable matrix A. For example, a real symmetric matrix. Start with any vector b and keep multiplying it with A. A A A ... A b The vector that the result will converge to is a scaled version of one of the eigenvect

If you are not speaking in jest (I strongly suspect you are), knowledge of linear algebra is one of the biggest bang for buck one can get as an investment in mathematical knowledge. So humble and basic a field. So wide it's consequence

The way I understand this is that adding of random variables is a smoothening operation on their densities (more generally the distributions, but let me speak of densities only). A little more formally, additions over random variables are c

Bean counters do not like pair programming. If we hired two programmers, the goal was to produce twice the LOC per week. Now we are doing far less than our weekly target. Does not meet expectation.

Regarding attention, anything that does not draw directly from the Greek mainline, does not get much attention in the mainstream. Lot of interesting mathematics was done by Indians, Persians, Arabs, Mayans. Indian mathematics has an additio

A related interesting fact is that small angular motions compose almost like vectors, order does not matter (i.e. they are commutative). This makes differential kinematics easier to deal with when dealing with polar or cylindrical coordinat
