I ask this as someone who is not fully across the ins and outs of DMCA. Linode has non-US data centres (eg Singapore). If the node hosting the content was just outside the US, would they need to do a take down? Or is the fact that Linode is

Ingest - the free version as I'm sure you're aware is 32bit only. So it is limited in how much data it can address. But the /rate/ of ingest I'd imagine is close to that of the 64bit, with the caveat that you'l

If you are interested in learning how to roll a timeseries database, and if you're not already familiar with it, I'd second the suggestions to try KDB/Q. Even if only to be inspired and understand what "good" looks

That's a shame. I'm not sure what the rationale is for such clauses - especially where performance of your tech is known to be pretty good (as is the case for KDB+). There's definitely a huge opportunity to displace KDB+ as t

I've been eyeing TimescaleDB at a distance for some time now. I'm curious if you have seen it used in finance as an alternative to KDB+ installations anywhere? Have you thought to release any benchmarks against KDB+?

In banks, a lot of the important operations are on entrenched/Legacy systems (eg mainframes) or vendor/cots solutions. Therefore for some developers in a bank, a lot of work tends to focus on shovelling data around the bank in a m

Agreed - great insight. And this effect is exacerbated when there is genuine malicious intent on the internet. I've sat with my mum or dad on several occasions, when they've been confused by 'ads' on websites which are d

+1 for using org-mode and org-drill. Also means that you can export it all to a well structured PDF and use on any device that can read PDFs. Downside is one cannot do drills unless at the PC.

We often forget that by the time the tech world is playing with something, it has perhaps already done the rounds in military. Automated sentry guns on the Korean DMZ have existed since around 2003, developed by a company that was associate

Are you asking for a comparison between development in India vs development in China? Or a comparison between development in (India or China) vs a presumably western Dev centre like the US? Seems a few answers here have assumed the latter.

Good read, I like JE's posts. But I definitely feel like this falls into the trap that a lot of similar posts fall into - attempting to "bullet-point" a role description inevitably will result in people criticising the inclus

It's good to know it's come leaps and bounds since the Win7 days. What about the software installation story? Is it still a case of download then click next next next. If it is then it's definitely a superior in Linux, where

Reading this I've grown even more appreciative of how easy ThinkPads are to repair/upgrade. Almost encouraged, given the many guides and YouTube videos available, and ultimately it's a cost saver to them. And to all those tha

People who can't remember their password often forget it due to having used that feature. Forcing yourself to type a password in over and over will pretty quickly encode it into muscle memory.

It's interesting to me that nobody has yet mentioned the Bloomberg terminal, which is basically what the author is describing. It seems Bloomberg "got this" a while back, and dug their heels on for their keyboard-driven termi

If buying a ThinkPad, definitely consider Fedora Workstation. I used Ubuntu for a few years before getting frustrated with some hardware+docking wake up issues, switched to Fedora and have not looked back. Also I hear a lot of the Fedora de

I'd agree with this. Whilst 9-5mac and its readership will be focussed on what Apple is doing right/wrong, this may be ignoring the fact that competitors are offering genuinely compelling products.

In theory I think this would work. However, the risk is that Lead Flash cannot be linked to any of the illegal activity that happens a few points after initial sale of the leads. So they'd probably have grounds for legal recourse again
