I don't know the circumstances, but my first reaction was: Eight minutes?! Eight ?! Like, can we use those eight minutes to take all the developers out back and have them shot?"

I am nearly driven to madness by the torrent of noise in public environments. I don't expect places full of people to be quiet, per se, but I do not understand why every such space needs to have eight screens and speakers every ten feet pu

I agree that a lot of people are cathecting their desires onto app.net. I'm probably guilty of that as well (and yes, I coughed up the $50). But what got me excited was his basic insight -- not entirely novel, I'll grant -- that any giant

Very surprised to see what a centrist I am; my unscientific number is -5). I would have pegged myself as much more liberal, but when it comes to specific points having to do with design and deployment, I'm more conservative than I would ha

The Friedman process goes like this: 1. Take a massively complex, world-historical economic process. 2. Ignore it. 3. Write a story about a shoe factory in Bangalore that massively oversimplifies, but overturns conventional thinking on, #1.

I take the point about clutter and typography, but the best email client I have ever used is nmh < http://www.nongnu.org/nmh/> , largely because I was able to hack together this kind of work flow effortlessly. I'm always marvelin

I had the same reaction. I think Rich Hickey is a genius, and I'm an absolute Clojure nut. I have every confidence that this is probably a very cool thing. But judging from that opening description, I gather that Datomic puts the data and

From the ChangeLog: "All command-line options are now documented in the man page." This should clear up any difficulty users may have had using the program.

Considering what happened to Lisp when machine learning was called AI, I'm not sure I'd want my language to win this contest. ;)

Steve Jobs and Dennis Ritchie were obviously major pioneers (and I admired them both), but of the three, McCarthy's work impresses me the most. I still marvel at the profound degree of lateral thinking evident in his articles. I suspect th

And it's awesome. When it came out, I immediately wrote half-a-dozen little things to work with it, including "whatson" -- an app that lets me do things like "whatson thursday" and have it show me what's on the calendar.

What's so striking to me, is how similar the exam is (in range, pace, and tone) to the Ph.D. oral exams I took for a doctorate in English (years ago). That same rhythm. The minute you start to set forth an argument, they get you off onto

Yeah, just kidding. It struck me as funny, because it's exactly the kind of thing hackers do (including me -- and I'm also a big Lisp/Clojure nut). As far as I can tell, this is more-or-less exactly how TAOCP was written.

So, I wanted to start a blog. But then I discovered that all blogging platforms suck, so I decided to write my own. Then I decided that all programming languages suck, so I had to learn a new one to write my blog. I would say Lisp's world

I'm discouraged by the fact that this may well be the worst logo in the history of technology.
