Devs here often don’t even really understand JWT tokens as evidenced by the hundreds-of-comments deep arguments I’ve witnessed over them.

Any company that doesn’t have some form of distributed tracing in this day and age is acting with pure negligence IMO. Literally flying blind.

I had the idea for a sarcastic weather app once. “It’s raining. Maybe the strangers won’t be able to tell you’re crying today.” “It’s sunny and 72°. If only you had friends to enjoy it with.”

This is my same complaint about interviews. I’m never asked to write some fancy algorithm and then figure out how to take it from O(n^3) to O(n). I’m asked to figure out why we’re fetching the user’s email from the db 6 times in one http re

> It is constantly objectively wrong and should not be used for anything important. Welcome to AI. I got into an argument with a junior dev about some coding best practices the other day and came to find he was using chatgpt as a source

Sure, but it’d be a hell of a lot easier for said actor to attack infrastructure on the ground, like an oil rig, and the powers that be don’t take kindly to that sort of thing, either. Before anyone could do any outsized damages they’d have

The cars may also last way longer when they’re driving around at 30mph and follow all the traffic laws to the letter. Humans are very hard on cars.

Kinda weird to see Java over Go, when the former is basically an entirely new language from what it was 10 years ago and the latter has made it an explicit goal to never break older versions and (almost) never change the core language.

I’d characterize it as the degradation of the product manager role. Too many project managers get promoted to product but don’t really know what that job entails so they just project manage harder. And to a project manager “I’m gonna take a

The article doesn’t break out Google/MS proper from their cloud offerings, so it’s not really fair to say they’re using more power like the folks at these companies are choosing to do this. They rent compute and their customers are usi

True, but the cause is at least obvious. Underground cables can fail or be cut even without anyone’s knowledge. Then it becomes a matter of digging until the problem is found.

Much more expensive to install and maintain, and while risk from wind and rain is lessened, you add the risk of any below ground construction accidentally severing cables.

I spent some time trying to prove two go binaries were the same in the name of reproducible builds but couldn’t figure out if it was possible, even though I had built both myself and knew they were in effect the exact same. Go binaries have

Toll optimization aside, there’s often a huge backup of the BQE or in Staten Island that makes the tunnel the next best option. I’ve faced that scenario probably 1/3 of the time trying to visit family in PA/NJ from Brooklyn.

I really wish there was a tunnel between jersey and Brooklyn. Every option sucks for that. You either end up stuck in traffic in Staten Island, manhattan, or queens.

Coding tests are an awful place to test someone’s conversational skills. I don’t talk while I code. You don’t either. Honestly I can’t even remember the last time I talked to anyone about the code itself outside of a PR. People talk about a

Not everything needs to be at “scale”. I’ve deployed this pattern over 10k req/sec but it’s all about your SLOs. I’ve (thankfully) never needed to lose sleep over a millisecond or 2 in my line of work.

I’ve always just used go’s built in reverse proxy if I need an API gateway. You can adapt it to meet any specific need, easily find libraries to do common tasks (CORS, rate limiting, retries, etc), and the best part: no configuration langua

It’s insane how uniformly bad every interview is these days. Everyone follows the same recruiter->leetcode->5ish “in person” interview process. If someone asks me to “design twitter” or about a time I disagreed with my coworker one mo
