This is why I wish more software jobs had flexible hours. The vast majority of programmers have absolutely no need to be in their office at some predefined hour. So if you had to work late one night, it'd be nice to be able to sleep some of

What did you do to combat the effect of that "dull jobs numb the mind" study that was on here last week? ( http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/7358863.stm ) I don't think I could stay interested in your n-back test for a whole 20 minu

The problem I have with those del.icio.us type urls is that I have a really hard time remembering where the dots go. Way back when del.icio.us was just getting popular, someone told me about it. When I got home, I tried "delicio.us", "delic

Anyone know what a "presentation deck" is? He says it's the most important thing it the world to have for a talk you give, but it's the first I've heard of it...

One of the problems is Git cannot handle multi-gig files, so if your home includes some virtual machines that you want backed up/sync'd amongst computers, then Git can't be your whole solution.

Do you disconnect/reconnect your laptop to the external monitor much? I.e., does it switch nicely between single and dual monitor use? I looked into doing that for my Ubuntu 7.10 laptop, since I have an extra monitor lying around, but it go

If your site is the kind that can be of use to both persons and businesses, you can set up a pricing/features structure that encourages businesses to pay a decent amount, but lets individuals get by for free or cheap. I believe DHH touched

Linux. Debian on my shared server and Ubuntu 7.10 on the laptop and dev server. I've been looking into Solaris (for ZFS), but debian-based distros is what I know, so it's what I'll use for now.

Cool I didn't know that. That'd make finding the spammed address even easier... But... FastMail costs money for anything more than a 10 meg inbox. I prefer the 6+ GB (and growing) of inbox space for free that Google gives. And all the power

One reason to grab your own domain, use Google's Apps For Your Domain, and set up a catch-all address. The pizza guys know me as papajohns@<domain>.com, Best Buy knows me as bestbuy@<domain>.com, my bank knows me as bank@

I thought Joost's strongest point was it's interface. I loved the interface. Not being browser-based was a plus for me. Having control of the video's size (beyond YouTube-esque postage stamp or full-screen), video that looked decent full-sc

My problem with Dynadot is this: In order to get their bulk pricing, you have to prepay $500. And you may not ever get any of your $500 back ever again. So for me, with my half dozen or so domains, that means I have to decide that Dynadot w

It works relatively well if you keep an eye out for "(scribd.com)" after the post's title... But yeah, it would be cool if pg auto-tagged PDFs. Wait... why am I getting the PDF and not the iPaper?

I'd like to keep it up to date, so just a harddrive is inadequate, since all my trusted friends and relatives are 3 hours away. I'd need a whole computer, on 24/7 with some ports forwarded and stuff. I don't want to impose the... 8 or 10 bu

Here's to hoping my bosses read this. There are so many engineers here working on single 18 or 19 inch monitors it's not even funny. I consider myself lucky to have two 19 inchers... But it's still very cramped compared to my set up at home
