Me too. I had no idea flying could be so enjoyable. I've made the Seattle -> SF trip a 4-5 times this year on Virgin and I've been over the moon at how easy and comfortable it's been.

Sometimes it's not that big of a deal. The idea is if you specify only the columns you need, sometimes those columns can be satisfied directly from the index (what's known as a covering index) and you don't need to seek around to the vario

There are lots of places in India that are difficult for Westerners to live in. The lack of running water, toilet paper, and unreliable electricity was very challenging for my friend who spent 6 months in Hyderabad. He also picked up a ve

You probably know this, but there is a mountain of bullshit to deal with at startup companies and in the IT field in general. I think you'll quickly find that bullshit is everywhere.

Well in his case it's because he's obsessed with finding the shortest possible solutions to the more difficult levels in the puzzle game Fish Fillets . He's recently rewritten the game's undo/redo system to help him in this. Sometimes peo

Amen. I know a guy who is an extremely talented programmer, but for a number of reasons currently has a very poor work ethic. While he is able to be considerably more productive than a number of his lesser clued co-workers, he isn't.

Steve Reich is another Reich worth listening to. My work/concentration playlist has Music for 18 Muscians , Violin Phase , and Octet . All great minimalist pieces that are interesting enough to keep your mind engaged, but not too distr

I have mixed feelings about this. I absolutely loathe the old, buggy, incompatible Solaris userland, and for me, Solaris can't die fast enough. OpenSolaris however seemed like a step in the right direction, keep the kernel and all the goo

This is good news. In my experiments with a bootable encrypted EBS volume I've wanted to use xts-aes on the volume, but none of the AKI kernels were new enough to support it. Now I can run a bleeding edge kernel, nice!

I don't think MySQL is in trouble. The MySQL community is strong, and innovation from the likes of Google, Percona, Facebook, and others has been just as important as of late than anything that Sun/Oracle/Innobase has done. There are plen

I remember maybe 5 years ago when I was re-entering the dating scene, I read in a few places that some women respond well told Old Spice simply because it was the fragrance their fathers wore. The logic to me seemed a bit creepy, but I did

The important thing to keep in mind is that emacs is ridicously bad at editing text. I don't know why this is being voted up. This is utter nonsense and not supported by any arguments.

I think Readability has raised my standards of what I consider 'readable'. I find myself using it all the time now as well. I've also noticed that I skim less with it. I'll be honest though, I struggled to finish this article. I'm not s

That kind of programming to me is fun. The most boring type of programming possible in my opinion is front end web development.

Just once I'd like to have a discussion on HN about either MySQL or PostgreSQL without having a long thread about why one is more popular/better than the other. Not going to happen.

That's a lot easier said than done. Unless you use ulimit to strictly enforce process memory limits (tricky) it's nearly impossible to know the how much memory a large complicated program (like MySQL) will allocate.

This is not worthy of HN in my opinion. Besides the content not being up to the quality I've come to expect, links that appeared yesterday on Reddit are meant for Digg.

While htop is a cool program with some nice features, the standard Linux top can show you everything you need to know. You can hit 'H' to show all the threads in a process. You can add the 'j' column which will show you the processes last

If it was a mutex contention issue, moving it to a single core wouldn't change anything -- there would be still be contention. I'm guessing it has something to do with CPU cache hits.
