Is it though? What if I have my TERM set to 'dumb' because I'm running your CLI command inside a very limited console embedded inside a text editor or other tool? At the very least you should `test -t` in your script to ensur

Org mode does a lot of different things, but one use case I find interesting is to be able to mix prose and program output in a technical document in a way that keeps things consistent when things change. I made a video[0] a year or so ago

If you have xterm-mouse-mode set it's pretty easy to size windows with your mouse. I just create the splits with the usual emacs window commands and then move things around with my mouse until I have things just right.

This is my problem. In order to get a decent sound in my untreated office (reverberant bare walls, hardwood floor, etc) I need to have my dynamic mic with a low gain setting and I have to be right up on it, which makes me look like I'm

I made a video[0] showing off the power of org-babel, which is the part of org that lets you embed dynamic code blocks in your document. In the video I write a little essay[1] on how git stores data that has a lot of dynamic content that is

Universally. Outside of Emacs, I have those "insanely bad" bindings in GUI text widgets, my shell prompt, when choosing/searching in in fzf, navigating scrollback in tmux, and inside REPLs of all flavors. Basically anywhere t

This is possible, but it's a bit of a pain. One problem is that the popular themes cater to GUI Emacs users where you have 24-bit color depth. On the terminal this gets approximated to one of the available 256 colors, and this approxim

I think the thing about Vi and Vim that has the most value in 2020 is not the software itself, but rather the keyboard-centric composable modal editing system that they popularized. Some of the growth that Emacs has enjoyed over the past se

That's right, /r/unixporn influenced me quite a lot. I read a lot of folks' dotfiles that were posted there and was inspired by the screenshots. Because I had built a lot of software with LFS, I wasn't at all afraid

Thanks Dang! It's interesting that in 2016 the top comment was about how out-of-date the documentation was, which made it very challenging for the novice to approach. When I did it in 2019, my experience was very different -- I marvele

I had a lot of fun doing this. You really get a feel for the evolution of build systems -- from older software that uses automake/make to newer programs that use meson/ninja/cmake etc. It was also cool to learn how to bootstr

Indeed. Back when 300 and 1200 bps connections were a thing, Ctrl-O (flush) was a vital special character. You can actually see "flush = ^O" if you run "stty -a" on Linux. However it's not part of Posix, and AFAIK h

As someone who is older, and spent much of their 20s working on their career, I regret that I hadn't spent more time on my personal interests when I was young. If I had it all to do over again, I would spend less of those years trying
