That's the point of open source. Take what in the hands of a single company would be a monoculture and turn it into a vibrant market with lots of choice. Yes, of course it wins. It's a better development model.

It seems like Windows Phone 7 should take away market share from Android, but there's one key problem that I think will prevent Windows Phone 7 from doing that: Internet Explorer. IE is a resource hog, and has horrible standards support.

From the bit of Bioinformatics work I did in college, that actually seemed a problem rather than a boon. Genes are not ascii sequences, and Perl is not really made to manipulate them. Perl is however an excellent scripting language, and tho

Especially if your business is web-based, you should probably be thinking of your designer as a team member, not a vendor that sells something called 'design.' It's really not that simple.

That's a tautology though. You're using the method of apportioning contribution to GDP (wages) to prove that GDP is being properly apportioned. There's evidence of your position, but it's hardly obvious. Personally I believe it to be incorr

The top 10% of Americans hold an ever-increasing share of American GDP. So I suppose to be a little finer-grained, upper echelons of society overpay themselves and underpay the majority of the labor market, even as they benefit from the fru

Personally I think looking at higher ed is looking at the wrong side of the equation. We're not in an education bubble, but a "bunge"[1] if you will - the opposite of a bubble - with regard to labor prices. In other words, people aren't ove

Not to mention "Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid" he explicitly says it's a parody, and silly anachronism and poor design choices are pretty standard for parody. If I were doing that film today, I could see using Comic Sans for the newspaper.

>They made consumers re-purchase music How many people actually bought PlaysForSure music? I don't really see how that's a huge deal. You could still use all of your existing MP3s, DRM-free AAC music from iTunes, and WMA files from Wind

Actually, from the two people I know who actually owned a Zune (and from Jerry Holkins: http://www.penny-arcade.com/2009/5/15/ ), Microsoft did in fact 'get' the iPod, and outdid it in a lot of ways. Microsoft just has shitty marketing. Bu

Anywhere minor modifications to the firmware could cause serious injury, it makes sense to restrict access to the firmware, because the firmware is a very small part of a hardware system that has been well-tested for safety. This makes the
