Still use it. You can pry it from my cold dead hands. The dual media library / playlist workflow is much nicer to use than iTunes (not to mention the latter becoming a bloated horrible piece of utter crap). It plays much nicer with net

And among the hundreds of thousands of older apps are apps built by smaller teams to supplement other things i.e. web services that struggle to keep everything maintained. It's far more important that the apps remain usable to their en

Amen. I also see this somewhat as a 'own your s t' scenario. Apple makes all of these systems and platforms, and then proceeds to abandon them, producing waste (in both materials and developer time for the apps that get updated f

Yeah, given how their ops situation is, I don't think that would be a good idea.

It can go both ways. If you mess up modification of the microservice such that it breaks other services that relied upon it, you quickly get into ceremony that a small team might struggle with. A monolith might have had the problem solved f

I'd be pretty happy if this were the case. Likewise, I'd be pretty happy if the same thing happened to instant messaging.

Well, Safa is somewhat opinionated. What should I do if I like 99.9% of the browser except one small thing that infuriates me a huge amount? It makes sense to offer preferences, especially to turn off certain things like gestures. In this c

Hmm, I've spent a fair bit of time with the 2016 MBPs and have owned and used many Mac laptops over the past decade. I wouldn't agree that there are no machines with "anything close" to the feel. I agree that the MBP is

To be fair, for the intended target - i.e. media creators, you can stick the dial over the existing controls that are most likely taking up screen real estate anyway. If you're not using keyboard input as much, I can definitely see the

Corporates are a different fish to SMEs though. Every SME I've seen in the last few years has at least some hardware that's been recycled by upgrading.

I read your comment soon after you posted it and sort of nodded internally, but over the last two days I've been actively noting how often I'm making a slip (i.e. through accidental 3D touch, or accidental swipe or whatever). I th

I try very hard to understand why they do some things, and come up short. With a lot of the minor UI tweaks, it's certainly not based on any real-world research, because some of the tweaks go against what's already established or

An Expose-style interface with short animation beat all other interfaces (taskbar click (window), dock click (app), winkey+#, alt-tab) in mean task switching time over a series of controlled scenarios (not the user's normal workflow -

It would annoy me a lot less if Apple (and the rest of them, to be honest) didn't just change stuff for the sake of change. Like oh hey, let's change four finger swipe up gesture to not be a toggle. Just because. Or, oh hey, let&#

Depends on what you're doing. Direct visual manipulation is best if you're using the mouse. Winkeys can be better if you're primarily trying to stay on the keyboard. I actually researched this back many years ago, and at the

Would you have said the same about 8GB three years ago? Because that's how long these machines have to last, realistically. And I'll bet that 16GB in three years will feel pretty cramped for a lot of higher end users.

Hmm. When API naming is good, you shouldn't need to be reading at the low level much, so IMO whatever makes it easy to skim for maintenance is the way to go.

I think realistically in many cases the buggedness will still favour many smaller functions - if for no other reason than they must all be named. The higher level function is then easy to read. The lower level functions get a name that can

I really disagree that it isn't possible without compromise. The Surface Pro, Surface Book, and iPad Pro all have hardware capable enough of providing both experiences for many users. If you, right now, built an iOS virtual machine int

Let's reset the expectations, and answer the question again. If you could buy an iPad Pro, that runs all the iPad apps, has a touchscreen with the awesome pen digitiser, that was also as fast as a Surface Pro, and could run all the des

Ten years ago, I was a staunch Apple fan. I liked their product line-up - it was simple, easy to understand, and the products were good. If you needed power, you bought a Pro. If you needed value, you bought the non-pro. Both sides had good

Yep - group of us found some original recordings, never released, from a bankrupt company once upon a time. Assets were never purchased by anyone. If we hadn't preserved, they would have gone to the tip and never been released.

The 2013 Air has a the same size battery as the non-touchbar model, a lower power GPU, the same TDP CPU. The display is possibly more efficient on the new pro compared to the older display, but it's got many more pixels, so, I'd g
