I second this recommendation. I used Carnets for the Advent of Code last year. I ran out of steam long before it did.

I would go even further and argue that for the vast majority of organizations vertical scaling is all you are ever going to need.

I agree with this. Developers whose primary skill and interest is in coding seem to be in complete denial about the future.

Complete rubbish. Most candidates nowadays are obliged to deal through low grade, poor quality recruiters. Demonstrating creativity to these morons is an absolute waste of time.

I absolutely agree with this. In my entire career I’ve never come across a situation where a company either needed or could even use real time data analytics. Real time data: occasionally but definitely. Real time data analytics: never.

Really!! All the jobs I’ve seen for COBOL programmers paid atrociously bad rates.

‘Understanding the business logic and getting it out of the customer’ is precisely what a lot of programmers are bad at doing. Many would rather talk to a compiler than a human being. For them, ChatGPT is a real existential threat.

This reminds me of the brochure I once received from a fishing camp. In the pricing section of the brochure, there was an item described, completely un-ironically, as “compulsory gratuities”.

Why would anybody want to become an expert typist in 2023? Modern speech to text is just so good.

Does anybody anybody really care anymore? As more production work moves to the cloud, so does the corresponding development. The only thing that’s needed is a modern browser and the underlying operating system becomes irrelevant.

Looks great and I shall definitely try it. I've always thought that Stitchfix were the most interesting ecommerce retail operation. It's a shame that none of their data science roles are available in London.

I tried it last year using JupyterLab. I found Julia error messages so unhelpful that eventually I gave up and returned to Python.

Everybody I know who installed smart home devices has abandoned them; none would recommend them. The main issues are surprisingly poor reliability and overly chatty interfaces.

I agree with this. In my experience, LightGBM is often good enough. The additional improvement provided by neural net models is not worth the substantial increase in development time.

My wife and I use a shared reminders list for the shopping. If one of us buys something, then we delete it from the list. This prevents duplicate purchases and reminds us both of what remains to be bought.
