It's true, I'm mystified that TNR gets any respect at all. I've always equated them with neoconservative/hawkish Democrat ideology, lockstep allegiance to Israel, support for the invasion of Iraq etc etc. It's funny

What's unfortunate is this attitude of "just face it, everybody stays away from (poor|black|stupid|ugly|martian) people, anybody who denies it is a hypocrite". Speak for yourself, own up to your prejudices, don't project

GUI is to me the field where inheritance actually makes a lot of things easier and natural. I would invert that and say GUI frameworks are why bad OO/excessive inheritance is so ubiquitous. I have no idea why all the major frameworks

More than just "in practice", it might be worse than copy/paste. Richard Gabriel nailed it in the 90s when he identified inheritance as a form of compression , not reuse, forcing the programmer to have to understand every cl

Finally a gender-bias I can get behind. That is, this finally proves women are smarter. Or at least less likely to spend 3-figure sums on an interconnect cable.

I'm having an interesting experience with this at my job ... Haskell appears to be MUCH more approachable when you understand the problem at hand. So much Haskell pedagogy wants you to write a compiler or a parser or ... whereas this a

It's funny but I think both sides of this argument are equally valid. Personally I think you need to interrupt coding frequently, for health and for cognitive freshness. When I've been tech lead, often the most heads-down devs pro

Great anecdote about the perils of mgmt. But I think it shows that management in an org or sub-org that has a terrible culture is ... terrible. I've been in and out of management, and how awful it is comes down to who's above you.

What I'd like to "condemn to obsolesence" is this tired narrative that insists that emacs needs to change to "get with the times." People were saying this when I starting using emacs in 2000, back when vi vs. emacs

Why would a tech-savvy jury be more inclined to discount testimony or non-technical evidence from the prosecution? It seems that the word of law enforcement has an advantage in the courtroom regardless of someone's literacy in any fiel

So much of the debate in discussion about this is whether police/FBI "abuse their power", are or are not "evil", if Hoover himself was obsessed, whether King was a saint or a hero or a fraud, was this or that legal,

It seems you've decided that US hegemony is a "good thing" regardless of the moral implications for ourselves and the world. However, some find actions like the following to be dangerous, immoral, unnecessary: * "the US

Thank You! It's very depressing to see constant regurgitation of cops-and-robbers morality. The FBI has deep historic ties to the Pinkertons, and has historically spent at least half of its resources (conservatively) on anti-radicalism

I really wonder why we need the JVM at all. For Haskell at least, the GHC runtime is getting pretty good, and seems to have at least basic tools for GC analysis etc. I'm ignorant of MLs so perhaps someone can speak to their status. Of

The Segway. Changed life as we know it. But yes. I also don't see why we have to discuss an obvious advertorial ... I guess that's what passes for "new tech" these days, whatever has a big enough army of flaks behind it.

I like Clojure and all, but this is just ... silly. First, 100% elisp compatibility is the no-exceptions requirement. Clojure doesn't have freakin' car and cddadr, not to mention the significant syntax differences. LISP weenies do

Agree strongly with this. It's a long-standing anti-socialist tactic to underfund and undermine solid, working government programs, and then denigrate those same programs as more proof that "big government doesn't work".

My problem is I don't think there's any agreement what Object Oriented Programming is and isn't, so it's pretty hard to "properly do it". Let's see. OOP generally involves "objects", ie structs o

Hmm ... Pedagogically, I wonder if Haskell suffers from this emphasis on math. For instance, I couldn't figure out State monad for the life of me, and in general how monadic calls could maintain a context "in the background".

Thomas Sowell?? On HN???? Please G*d no. An old-school conservative op-ed--page troll who now looks moderate compared to tea-party FOX newsers -- boring but still toxic. Please leave him in his regional-newspaper dungeon where he belongs.
