It's like they got things reversed. What I miss about old web dev is the simplicity of the tooling: no complex build systems, "CI" was just uploading your changes via FTP (maybe using something like Dreamweaver's feature

I know someone who claims to be a visual learner because he prefers video tutorials. But I say to him: no, I like pictures too, but what I can’t stand about videos is the person talking. I want to be able to scan things at my own (varying)

The technical skills alone to do this are amazing, but what I'm absolutely in love with is the full on blinkenlights/rackmount/mini computer style of the hardware.

Also consider that when the clamshell iBook launched very few home users were buying laptops (it was also the first consumer laptop with wifi). The later G3 and G4 iBooks were well timed, however.

My high school physics dept were still using a then 20 year old BBC Micro to run experiments which only worked with a specific piece of ultrasonic experiment gear. I wonder if it still gets wheeled out on that cart to this day...

> Hide Park is a park in Ankh-Morpork with a small lake. Its unusual name comes from old times, when a hide was the measure of land a man with a bullock could plough on a wet Thursday I should have known Terry Pratchett had based this on

Regarding comments about manufacturing plants and the LCH, sure both of these examples aren’t software directly (but they also wouldn’t be possible without software), but they are also always under constant fixes, feature upgrades and optim

Apple IIs are surprisingly hardy but with one exception: there's a Rifa-branded line filter capacitor in the power supply that tends to blow but it's easy enough to replace (some say you can even just remove it).

The real overhead now is in interfacing: your CLI screen still needs to output (probably) VGA graphics, you'll need USB host support, wired and wireless networking, more sophisticated file systems...

Oh no, you’ve given me ideas now... How about old wardrobes painted to look like the cabinets? You could even get an old reel to reel tape player and put it behind some plexiglass for that tape drive effect.
