I still have over a dozen Radio-Electronics and Popular Electronics issues from the 80s and 90s that show how to make all kinds of neat high voltage toys :)

The purpose of using a hash is just to avoid running out of disk space. With enough disk space, you don't even need to hash/delete files.

Here's another approach: Let the compressed file contain a hash (say, SHA1) of the original file. The decompression program then generates random files of the chosen size. If a generated file's hash doesn't match the desired hash, delete it

Just post the original data file on the web, then have your "decompression" program download the file. The "compressed" file could simply contain a URL.

"People in eastern Congo are massacred to facilitate smart phone upgrades of ever diminishing marginal utility." It's not just smart phones; it's anything that uses tantalum capacitors. If, as an engineer, you can avoid using tantalum capac

Also, if your version of tail doesn't support the -r option, you can reverse the order of the lines using the tac command.

When I discovered a vulnerability in Mac OS X that would allow a unprivileged user to keylog every user on the system (CVE-2007-0724), I let Apple know, then kept quiet until they fixed the issue. It took them 11 and a half months to fix. T

I used roughly the same philosophy recently at work in dealing with a library that could block for intolerable periods of time (sometimes indefinitely). Basically, I used a pthread_mutex_trylock and a pthread_cond_signal to pass data to a w

I enjoy working 80 hours weeks once in while, when I get stoked on creating something new. What I can't stand is daily 10:30am daily scrums when I've been up until 4am coding. If you want to kill-off your employees' passion, I recommend agi

If there's a bug, and you have to wade through 10K+ lines of utter shit to fix it, WITHOUT causing a regression, you're screwed. The "black box" mentality works fine for prototyping, but once you've got a working prototype, you should throw

One thing I don't like about it is that you often can't keep splitting chunks down to the line level. I usually end up having to type 'e' to edit the patch manually.
