GM thought like this, and Toyota ate their market from the bottom up. If the old guard aren't the ones destroying their business, then they should be petrified of anyone who gains a beachhead.

In short, Heroku needs to hire someone with some operations research experience. This is a mathematical modelling problem, not really a code problem. Break out Mathematica, Matlab or R and model the damn problem. Then go research the soluti

I'm honestly surprised there aren't tools available now replicating what Heroku does. We should have puppet scripts to deploy, instrument and manage all the popular infrastructure choices by now. The same way originally Linux was a build i

Both Nvidia and ATI have been caught cheating at graphics benchmarks. Their drivers would detect when the benchmark programs were being run, and go through lower quality fast paths. You can google "quack.exe" for details on one particularly

Michael Abrash talked about this in his black book of graphics programming. WHen he was writing quake, they could trade off between lighting fast graphics (40fps+, on a 486) 99% of the time with the occasional horrible slowdown to less than

This somehow reminds me of the slammer SQL worm. A simply formed single packet caused a tsunami over the internet. Personally, I am not at all surprised that this sort of thing exists. I'm sure there's lots more defects out there to be foun

You've just described how TV infomercials work. 1. Play the commercial on tv. 2. Sell the product and collect the money. 3. earn interest and find the cheapest manufacturer to do JIT manufacturing in the 6-8 weeks you have to ship the produ

You couldn't be more right. We're still working with such low level tools it's embarrassing. The worst part is, I think this is because of a sort of job security mentality. We had real working RAD tools in the 90's (NeXT/Apple enterprise ob
