Hacker News has moderators who can place things at the top of the page regardless of votes. Personally I think they've been do a great job, but YMMV.

For anyone like me who is NOT a big fan of Sagan's non-fiction: I've just read his novel, Contact, expecting not to like it, but actually thought it was great. His language is less flowery in the novel than it when he was appearin

I love this video! I'm sad to say that it has nothing at all to do with Smalltalk. Its topic is an attempt to make all programs that run in Linux (and similar systems) able to access each others' data structures, including each ot

I'm guessing, because I'm bored, and hopefully an expert will confirm or correct, but I think it means that they place sync markers every 24th of a second, to make syncing with video efficient.

Philosophy (most sorts, although philosophy is such a broad field that there will be some disagreement about what it includes). For philosophy, we mostly use the Stanford Encyclopedia Of Philosophy: https://plato.stanford.edu .

There was a very good (charitable) takedown of some of the content of GEB referenced on Hacker News a few months ago, but I can't find it :-( Can anyone help please?

It's in nixpkgs (for MacOS and Linux). I haven't tested it because it's flagged as having a security vulnerability (actually that's an excuse - it's really because I'm busy) but it should work.

You might like to post that as two or three separate comments, since you're getting pushback on just one part of it. I strongly agree with you about the WSJ (and, personally, the rest, but the rest is separate).
