As a friend of mine once said, a working dog doesn't just need a job , they need a task list . I live in a city with one and it's almost a full-time job for me keeping him from getting bored. (A very fun job though - I'm

In my opinion that one view of his is obtuse, and TBH I'm happy that you agree with me about that, but he has many other views and overall he's extremely smart (according to me, and according to almost all philosophers). Perhaps

You'll be pleased to hear that I've heard John Searle mention his (Searle's) dog as evidence in an argument with Dennett.

How old are your MacBooks? It works fine on a pre-Retina 2012 MacBook Pro.

Why doesn't someone use kmonad or libinput or something to make a utility that holds a database of the most-used applications and, whenever the user focuses a window, remaps the keyboard to some set of consistent system-wide bindings?

best comment ever (well, to be more precise, best consumer software comment ever)

Me too, and that's an important point ... but for the photos I put on my website and still look at later, the proportion is more like 50%.

Both comparisons are interesting, IMO. Phones naturally get replaced every two years or so, for lots of reasons most of which have nothing to do with the cameras. DSLRs are expected (by me, anyway) to last for decades. Mine was made in 200

My experience is similar, and I bet our experience is very common (among people who've tried both). My prosumer DSLR and medium-expensive lens is so much better than any phone for wildlife photography. For indoor low-light portraits,

This is a very very short article that doesn't say much! But it quotes Steven Goodman, who has been one of the best and clearest thinkers on foundations of statistics for a long time IMO, so anyone who wants more could follow up on hi

I agree with all your points, but I'd like to add that IMO most of the old Pixel phones are great value second-hand (at least where I live).

This is one of my favourite jokes but nobody ever laughs when I tell it. Which makes me sad.

I agree ... and I think we urgently need that CLI.

Recently I got lost in a tiny pocket of forest of about an acre, across the road from my house, when it was night and there happened to be no moon. (But I was fine once I got over my embarrassment and used the compass on my phone.)

Q: What does a dog have in common with a duck? A: They're both dogs (except for the duck).

Good point which I hadn't thought of. I really like GNOME 4 for my own workflow, but it doesn't have much in common with GNOME 2.

Right, and I'm pretty sure you can use the same display manager with both (at least if it's lightdm), and then switching back and forth between gnome and KDE is literally a matter of switching between the words "gnome" t

I love QMK, but IMO it's not so vital to have it now that there's a good alternative at the OS level: https://github.com/kmonad/kmonad#features

I use a browser/OS combo that makes it very difficult to use any add-ons except for a DNS-based adblocker, and the only thing I miss is a password-filler-inner.

In case anyone wants to program this (or any other keyboard) without QMK, there's kmonad: https://github.com/kmonad/kmonad
