This is pretty cool. It sounds like they have found a way to do random initialization and pair it with a learning rate that makes the loss curve invariant to the width of the network. Then they can do hyperparameter optimization on a much s

This is a good question to bring to /r/askphysics . It's pretty simple, and isn't the kind of problem with quantum mechanics that the article is referring to.

I also use Synology, but with apple photos. There's a mac mini on my home network that syncs the photo library automatically, and then Synology Drive syncs the local folder to the Synology. That is in turn backed up to backblaze weekly

You can get through to a web server, but that web server uses DNS records or those routes to hit other services necessary to render the page. So the server you hit will also time out eventually and return a 500

It's amusing that the top 3 trending reports are the FB sites that are down, and then the mobile carriers themselves, presumably because when FB doesn't load they assume it's their mobile network's fault. People really d

I'm an avid astrophotographer, and the prices for cooled mono and cooled color cameras are the same. If you compare a dedicated, cooled astro camera to a consumer DSLR then yes, they are more expensive. But apples to apples they are ex

FWIW, those photos (4,5) of the Andromeda galaxy aren't from the HST. The Andromeda galaxy is about 6 times larger in the sky than the moon, so those are most likely from an amateur with a telescope (looking at the diffraction spikes,

Yes, the overall algorithm will do something much more precise and comprehensive, so it's not like this scoring function needs to be perfect. Still, it matters in a quick evaluation so I'm surprised it isn't in there. A few e

Great writeup! One thing I don't understand is why it would be smarter to augment the inputs with some of the missing board information - particularly the availability of castling. Even though this network is a quick-and-dirty evaluati

I don't think that's whats happening. Basically, in a repo you have one party posting a treasury bond as collateral and being lent the equivalent amount of cash. There's an interest rate you're charged on the cash, and p

Shameless plug, but another option for running your experiments on a GPU is Spell ( https://spell.run ). Very simple to use and will allow you to use as many GPUs as you want at once and only pay for the compute time. You can also

Actually the PCI express topology is configurable, which is one of the innovations. You can put all 8 gpus on a single CPU bus or have 4 on each CPU (but have to use QPI between them)
