Hhmm. You didn't actually mention my first reason (though #3 is sort of related): Google creates more value than it captures. Remember the Web in '98? Remember domain name bidding wars, because typing "www.shopping.com" into the address bar

I take your points. Here's the thing: if ACID is an aspect of developer tools and not a user experiences, and if ACID tools are the default, and if (as anyone who has held a checking account in the U.S. would surely agree) user-experience f

Googling for "site:delong.typepad.com karl marx" will get you some succinct interpretations of Marx's very large body of thought from a professional who knows his stuff and has a perspective reasonably amenable to the average HNers.

Wonderful cause. I'd love to read about the tensions between your goal and the various business models that suggest themselves. You will succeed at your mission precisely to the extent that your users reduce their spending relative to their

You can fail, pick yourself up, and try again. You can increase your probability of doing good, and accept the tradeoff WRT business success. I should add that I think Paul presents a very clear vision of why he thinks this is not a problem

My concern about Paul's vision has always been (2), flexibility. It is my humble belief that you should care what you succeed at, not just that you succeed at something. On this point Paul seems to be leading in the opposite direction from

Apple sells 22M Macs a year, and growing. How many people do you think compiled a Java program on Mac OS X worldwide this year? 10K? M-a-a-y-b-e 100K?

Ah, right, different problem. There's much to be said and disputed about what makes a 10K program Pythonic; my oversimplification would be something like: - between half a dozen and two dozen files in 2-3 directory levels - lots of

Is it possible you're comparing lines of code directly? The "size" of a code base is tricky to define, but many people accept a rough rule of thumb that a project of complexity X that might require, say, 10K LOC in competent/straightforward

Anyone have good stats for the browser-vs-non-browser (i.e. dedicated FB/twitter client, Instapaper, etc.) use of HTTP to consume HTML. I bet you'd find that c. 2002 IE had 90% of the browser and browsers had 99.9% of HTTP+HTML, but that no
