Not sure that Canada has defunded it's military as much as it's been told "you don't need it". Canada couldn't buy proper nuclear subs from the USA but for Australia it was okay? And let's not talk about l

The value is realized when you have both discriminated union types _and_ language pattern matching (not regex). Then it's not just a way to structure data but a way to think about how to process it.

Because as long as you stay away from anchors and inline JSON, YAML is a perfectly workable, structured, human-readable format that supports comments.

Yes. A model that can answer "I don't know" would be much more trustable than the current used car salesman we have now.

IMO hard links are underused in filesystems. You can have the same file / dir appear in different places under different names. Once linked, app doesn't have to care and runtime cost is zero.

The human world is full of special codes and obscure gestures that only have meaning if provided in the right sequence to the right people. Computer programming being documented and formalized makes it more accessible than many social circl

I'm reminded of the old joke "how to shoot yourself in the foot in 25 different languages". The first one was "C - you shoot yourself in the foot." Zig remains very close to that philosophy. So the difference is not

The JVM and the ecosystem it sustains are more important than Java itself. The main reason newer languages can run "everywhere" is because hardware has been commoditized and the number of server OSes has been reduced to two. The J

The type system of Kotlin? It's the same as Java + syntactic sugar for nullability. Don't pretend otherwise.

I strongly disagree with Kotlin being strictly better than Java. It pretends to fix things that haven't been problems in Java for more than 10 years while introducing a layer of syntactic complexity that's completely unwarranted.

The biggest selling point of Java is that you can easily find programmers that know it. They will need some training to do HFT style code but you'll still pay them less than C++ prima donnas and they'll churn out reasonably robust
