Checkout Tabelog, a Japanese version of Yelp. Anything over 3.5 is phenomenal. 4.0+? Rare. 4.5 is probably the best sushi place in all of Tokyo. Anything over 2.0 is great. 1.5 is manageable and 1 or below is bad. We in the west just love s

We need something new here. This is not scalable. If a group of engineers can't write a new browser in sabbatical, then we need to change what a browser (and the spec) should be. Access to internet should be simple, not complicated so

You're actually right. Just don't call the portions of the app and you can horizontally scale too.

You can still build a "monolith" but in a very modular way. Can't scale independently like microservices, but what if you don't need scale! Compile times are higher but what if you don't need to compile that much co

Thanks! That's really thorny. It goes against the grain of composability and logically destructuring the command into verbs and actions and modifiers. They should not overload y for yank. Choose anything else that's not used.

Could you please explain why we use Yank here? From what I understand yank puts the surround-in-word in a register. But there is nothing surrounding the word! I thought yank was for copying and pasting stuff. I can't understand why ysi

Now that's amazing. Not only because it was hardware based, but because you were solving a real problem, a limitation, instead of just aesthetic endeavor. It was an engineering solution. There is a lot of aesthetic beauty in mundane en

Nailed it. At-will employment in CA, so the employee can be fired or laid off instantly in an afternoon - happens all the time. But, they're generally expected (not required) to give 2-3 weeks notice. I always found this a bit asymmetr

Ugh. Tell me about it. Workplaces are full of this bullshit. Ergonomics training - CYA for lawsuits due to repeated motions, they want to make sure you signed off on the training. It has nothing to do with your well-being. Diversity and Inc

Thanks for the discussion, I learned about the NCS system and you seem to know a lot about this.

Isn’t the perceived brightness depend on surrounding colors and many other variables such as motion, incident illumination, etc? Those things cannot be part of a specification such as CIE or NCS.

The definition of “senior” is vague and subjective. When you try to say objective things such as “6-8 years to become senior”, that’s meaningless because “senior” is undefined.

Interesting. Can you provide source about normalization? I thought CIELab and CIELuv spaces use some form of average human perception correction factor. At a given luminosity, it should be the same regardless of the orthogonal chromaticity

I read it as "They're just testing waters, they have no intentions for further expansion". I am sorry if I misread it. If I didn't, then I strongly believe that China wants to expand its terrorial powers to SCS, Taiwan,

Giving that Shanghai stock market trades more than HK, that argument doesn't hold up. China didn't need HK. They did not want a western-aligned population of 7M people within 40km of its borders and instead decided to deal with th

I think war can still go on between nuclear armed nations - Tradional naval war happens in a localized region whereas the nuke option with current ICBMs is a complete and utter destruction of the country. Imagine 200 ICMBs landing in the US

You forgot that Chinese invasion on Indian borders left some 50+ people killed just 3 months ago. You can't give a pass by saying "They're just testing waters". Everything in war is testing waters.

This is one of the most exciting developments in the history of the internet. Apple has always sided with privacy and while DDG toots it, they’re too small to build an independent service. I am thrilled, excited and perhaps surprised why it
