The other way of looking at it is that some love for the craft is pretty much a prerequisite for the self-taught, whilst many graduates are there for the career. N=1. I remember showing an incredibly competent CS colleague something I'

That article stinks of PR. It's certainly an interesting, newsworthy development, but the piece is missing just a teeny bit of context: the crypto donations and Trump interests, the money lost in the last cycle, the risks involved in o

I wouldn't underestimate the anxiety it's causing. Most of my social circle are non-technicial. A lot of people have had a difficult time with work recently, for various reasons. The global economic climate feels very precarious,

Yeah, the areas AI has provided real value to me are the simple things: logging, docstrings and cli stuff being the best examples. I can throw up a basic sketch, focusing on the code, and get it to add the quality stuff after.

Totally agree, this behaviour is maddening. I set a hotkey to toggle completions, made it useful again.

I don't see what's "woke" or even "unwoke" about absurdly aggressive copyright enforcement or your bitcoin account being frozen.

The site suggests that VPNs may be effected. What's the mechanism here? Is this likely to cause trouble for all VPNs?

Had my phone left uncharged for the best part of a week recently. Barely needed it. It's my laptop that eats my brain.

Totally. Took a while to make the switch, but could never imagine going back. It's not like it'll get better. No idea what the value proposition for the average home user these days.

Whilst my recent experience possibly agrees with the findings, I came here to moan about the methods. Whether it's 16 or 246, that's still a miserably small sample size.

Yeah, I didn't enjoy Scribus. Horrible UX, which probably has its roots in "professional" DTP from the nineties. Like, one does not simply just paste an image into Scribus. I'm sure it's possible to do plenty with i

I picked a book of his diaries up recently, it's been great to pick at. The copy I have has _a lot_ about his garden and the countryside around him, which has been fun to read whilst working on mine. Lots of very terse household entrie

I've got a bunch of artistic side projects and regularly need DTP. I switched to Linux a few years back, and pretty much the last remaining pain point is DTP software. Is there anything out there in the FOSS world at a similar level to

Yeah, Linux gaming is amazing in 2025, and it's all down to Steam choosing to run the Deck on Linux. You don't need the deck for it either, I'm not sure you even need Steam. Such an incredibly pro-consumer move by a company w

Yes, we take extreme behaviour, that is harmful to others, and prohibit it as a society. Where we run into trouble is where we say, well here is an example of a case where this extreme behaviour may be countenanced. There may well be such c

The American comment was admittedly flippant, but the point remains that you cannot construct morality on edge cases. Violence is abhorrent. Frequency is relevant because one can base one's life and actions on principles of nonviolence
