As someone who's worked in plenty of kitchens, I can thoroughly recommend the book. Totally nails kitchen culture. There's this one chapter where he just rolls through a day at work, it's so good. A phenomenal writer, much mi

There are two editions: Java and Bedrock. Bedrock is the one that's got Realms, which is the easy way to get servers running. Have this problem with my brother and nephew, would love to get the lad on Linux, but this is a real obstacle

I sent this to an R friend, and he was like, "yeah, it's been changed for a few years now". Is he missing something or has there been a major version or something?

Bounced around between a few setups, but happy and productive with a single 1080 and a Lenovo Legion laptop monitor. I had a third monitor at one point, but it was pretty poor quality so I let it go. Can't say I really miss having thre

Downvoted, so I'll expand: - The twin Y axes run to different ylims (50, 100 on left, 30, 80 on right). This is misleading in itself, as you're measuring two different things, but unforgivable when points are connected across the

Going through a lot of changes right now and two lines are reverberating in my head. I was into punk as a kid, still am I guess, and there's this recurring motif in Rancid tracks: "the secret to a good life is knowing when you

LLMs are awful for this. I've got a project that's doing structured extraction and half the work is deduplication. I didn't go down the route of LLMs for the clean up, as you're getting into scale and context issues with

Hard disagree. CG in films is awful when done cheaply, and this all looks like really cheap CG.

A reasonable comment, unfairly downvoted. That said, I do firmly agree with the parent: there is choice involved here, engineering decisions. The Microsoft world is particularly bloated, as they insist on shoehorning in unwanted anti-featur

I think the point is that it's a very simple interface. I'm in the camp of it ain't broke, so let's not fix it. It gives you an API, doesn't get in your way if you wanna add CSS. Everyone is free to consume HN as th

I dunno about you lot, but I actually really like Stable Diffusion 1.5. I like giving it weird, non-prompts, like lines from songs or novels. I then run it for a few hundred generations locally and doing stuff with the malformed shit it com

I have an AlphaSmart. I never really got on with it and will probably sell it soon. I quite like the approach proposed here: can re-use your own hardware, bring your own monitor (I hated the AlphaSmart's screen), even hack around a bit

Plus one for an Arch-based system, way better than Ubuntu/Debian for gaming. All these Nvidia driver issues totally disappeared when I switched. Rolling release is a hell of a lot better in this context. SteamOS is Arch, IIRC.

A bit of a brutal title for what's a pretty constructive and reasonable article. I like the core: AI-produced contributions are prototypes, belong in branches, and require transparency and commitment as a path to being merged.

We're in a bubble, a mania, and the top company is excited to announce they're gonna do erotica. It is hemorrhaging money, with little in its offering to distinguish its competitors.

I don't think they've done much that's that impressive since the launch. Cancelled my sub ages ago for other offerings. Zero moat with crazy amounts of debt and financial engineering. What could possibly go wrong?

The contagion risk is huge. As the article points out in several ways, the AI bubble is the only part of the US economy where number go up. Every single bank, fund and retail investor is heavily, if not existentialy, exposed to this house o
