No. I'm in no way basing this on my own preferences. I'm basing it on data and numbers. If advertising didn't work, it wouldn't be a $multibillion industry.

This is the sort of uneducated attitude I'm talking about. Advertising is not 'sleazy'. It works, and it provides a service to both advertiser, publisher, and consumer. Do you also consider online dating to be sleazy, or job posting sites?

> It's just that it makes clear that advertising revenue is a hard way to make money. Respectfully, that's a very naive conclusion to draw. You may as well try selling wooly hats and coats in the desert, and conclude that making money

I think for a community devoted to startups, having a particular dislike of online advertising, and a strange "That's not real income" mentality is unfortunate. If you rule out advertising income because you don't like adverts, or because y

Then respectfully, you're doing it wrong. There's unfortunately a lot of people who believe all you need to do is slap ads on any website and watch the money come in. It actually takes time, effort, learning, and to some extent skill to kno

It says nothing about online advertising. Reddit is pretty much the worst website to try and advertise to. The community is extremely anti-advertising, anti-capitalism anti-big-companies, etc etc. Coupled with that I don't think the demogra

Has anyone on HN ever actually used one of these in code they've written? I've never understood why y-combinator is useful or impressive. Interesting, maybe, but not really useful.

Disagree strongly. Every time I get passed a github URL, it plonks me in a daunting page full of source code. If you scroll down a page or 2 sometimes you can see a text README file that tells you WTF the project is about. On Google code, y

So now when your email address gets hacked, ALL your usernames and passwords to every website are also hacked! At least with normal un/pw you need to request a password reset from the website. I don't think we should be tying logins to emai

Surely the recent spate of websites being valued in the Billions rings some alarm bells that something is seriously up? I don't know how you can reasonably value a company that has only existed for a year or two at that level. Things can

Are you seriously using the words "fame" and "famous" without sarcasm there? Perhaps "well known within certain programming communities" would be more apt.

Stranger things have happened. Look at the games console wars. Sega? Atari? Once completely dominating, then in a very short space of time dead.

One of the big wins with android, is that you can choose from literally 100s of phones. From loads of different manufacturers. You can get a basic pink square phone, or a massive phone with HD display. That's never going to happen at Apple.

Creating new languages doesn't create any value. It's not solving a problem. It's just solving the same problem that has already been solved countless times before.

I'd add "writing it in a new popular language" != value. The amount of time reinventing the wheel in hip new languages is truly staggering.

FWIW, The paper costs £1, so with a readership of 7 million or so every week... That's around £350m / year. The top advertiser, Sky, spends £2m a year with the paper. So I find it hard to believe that advertisers are all that important.
