The major benefits to me is that git is fast, branching is cheap (and yes, cheap branching does change how you approach a project; I never did figure out branching under cvs and apparently, it's just as easy under svn as it is under cvs) an

Procedural programming concerns itself with actions acted upon the data, whereas object oriented concerns itself with data upon which actions can be applied. Think of code as verbs, and data as nouns, and procedural languages are verb orie

About my network math---100,000 users per minute equates down to 1,667 requests per second, so are you sure you need 1,000,000+ hits per minute? Or are those 100,000 users really sending down 10 hits per minute?

Most of the responses here focused on the disk/data aspect. What about the actual network? IPv4/TCP has a minimum overhead of 40 bytes per packet, with a seven packet overhead for the connection itself (three for making a connection, four

How far back? EOData ( http://eoddata.com/ ) has 15 years of pricing information for $20 for a number of exchanges, which would certainly save time and isn't horribly expensive for what you get.

http://boston.conman.org/ If you are using Firefox, you can use the "View->Page Style" menu to select the various stylesheets (all, except for the default one, is a type of April 1 joke). Also, if you check the source, you'll see that

Given enough faces to average, and you end up with a nearly iconic human image ( http://boston.conman.org/2007/08/28.1 ). And I shudder to think of what Hollywood would do with this technology.

I just found epoll() much easier to work with than select() (been there, done that, rather not go back to it) or poll(), and the fact that you avoid scanning an array upon return.

epoll() is for IO-bound situations. You write your program using an event model, where the events are IO related (you select events based upon file descriptors being ready for reading and/or writing) which (in my opinion) make for easy pro

I'm curious as to what you are storing besides the URL. Given the two figures, (200M RAM, 30k URLs) I calculate that you are using 7k per URL, which seems a bit excessive to me. Or does the 200M include other data besides the URLs?

But I have to wonder how RedHat is compiling the packages. A few years ago I was bit with this, when the system supplied regex library I was linking against (I was writing a C program) was actually slower than a shell script with 20 greps

I did that a few months ago ( http://boston.conman.org/2007/11/30.1 ) and found some surprising results ( http://boston.conman.org/2007/12/02.1 )which showed that using getpid() wasn't a good test of system call overhead.
