I find luacheck (a linter for Lua) invaluable for picking up typos, unused variables, variables shadowing other variables and unintentional global use (since Lua defaults to global by default). The types of checks seems mostly reasonable t

There are two control codes, SO (shift-out) and SI (shift-in) that can be used for this---SO to switch to another character set, and SI to switch back. So you SO to Emojicode, and SI back to Unicode.

My own implementation of coroutines for C [1] requires each coroutine to have its own stack. It simplifies things quite a bit. [1] https://github.com/spc476/C-Coroutines [2] [2] More of a "proof-of-concept"

But can the compiler warn about such undefined behavior? Because if it can't, it's not much better than C.

It may very well depend upon the tool chain. The Solaris C compiler/linker can inline external functions (a previous developer at my company relied upon that behavior when writing code), but that's the only one I'm familiar

I use it to show intent, as functions I mark as inline are those that, pre-C99, would have most likely been a macro. I prefer the inline function over a macro as it prevents a certain class of errors and you get some additional type-checki

Having implemented CBOR [1], it's really only an issue for the x86, which can do unaligned reads. On most other architectures (even little-endian ones like RISC-V) it's less an issue because you will either have to copy the byt

It depends. with RS-232 (the old serial port standard) bits were transmitted least-significant-bit first, with the most significant bit sent last [1]. Getting back to hex dumps, here's one of some data: 00000000: 6C 6F 77 09 30

DynASM is an interesting tool (it's used in LuaJIT). I used it to test integer overflow overhead [1] (mainly because I could specify different expression lengths and test `INTO` vs. `JO`). [1] http://boston.conman.org/

Well, there is Synthesis OS [1] where the kernel can rewrite itself on the fly to provide synthesized system calls (think of a specialized `read()` call that can return a file line-by-line for just a simple example). But even that is (was?

By default, only root can bind to ports 80 and 443. You can change this policy, but that's considered unsecure because then any program can bind to the so called "privileged ports."
