This drives me up the wall so much. I had a boss that used to introduce me to customers as an engineer, and I'd correct him on the spot. And now that I'm looking for another job (not because I pissed off the boss), I keep having t

No, I'm disagreeing with you that it's getting worse, as well as that it's all that bad in the first place.

Wow, that's the most condescending opening to a comment I've seen in a while.

FORTRAN means what it's always meant. The standard is a guide for the implementor. The user needs to code to the implementation. It's a different way of thinking about languages than most people usually do, but it's been true

Yeah, that sounds quite different than industrial PCs, where the engineer specifying it spends 10 minutes pouring over specs and 2 seconds looking at the picture.

Depends if you worship a god that encourages mankind to reach its full potential instead of one that's strangely obsessed with people not doing butt stuff.

Industrial PCs are computers meant to go in industrial environments. They vary quite a bit but often have to handle dirty (possibly explosive or corrosive) air, 24v power, wide temperature ranges, lots of electrical and radio noise, and bei

I'm writing some quick and dirty software to locate Hirshmann switches, read their SNMP to determine what's connected to each port, and build a map of how the switches are connected. Hirshmann sells software to do this, but my com

Is this an attempt to give the decision-makers on your projects a way to develop a clue? My work is logistics-related and a lower priority than missle defense, but I'm surprised the people pulling my strings manage to get their pants o

I had the same thing happen - lost my text adventure because it grew too large. That spurred me to figure out a better way of writing text adventures. I thought my solution of using a single parser and parallel array for game data was prett

If you're on UNIX or working in the embedded space, C is still everywhere and gets lots of love. C tends to get lots of libraries anyway because everything can FFI to it.

Ugh. It's weird because on the one hand, I'd love a text-only email world. On the other hand, I wish people would just admit defeat. We lost. HTML email is the norm. We need to accept it and move on. Attitudes like this are what h

Music has an interesting relationship with time and human appreciation. At any particular time, there's a lot of music being produced. It's filtered at the source by things like the Billboard 100 and DJ preference, but a lot of mu

There's a reason no one uses cigarette lighters in cars anymore. If you actually try to use a cigarette lighter in a modern car, you'll likely melt your dashboard. They don't make them for that purpose anymore.

I don't see it. The US government does questionable things to people in places like Guantanamo Bay because the constitution gives those people rights if they set foot on US soil. Data doesn't have rights, and governments have the

This sort of work is ideal for robots. We don't do it much on Earth because you can pay a tech $20/hr to swap hardware modules, not because it's hard for robots to do.

A light oil has a density of 700kg per cubic meter. Most common oils are denser. Then you'd need vanes, agitators, and pumps to keep the oil moving around without forming eddies. These would need to be fairly bulky compared to fans and

"Play" has a specific meeting for reenactors. When I was in the SCA, I "played" an 11th century Welsh longbowman. It's certainly not a derogatory term when used in this context, and the amount of effort put into it

If you don't do much with images it's probably not anything you need to worry about. If you care about things like HDR, it means you can now use PNGs for that. If you work with graphics for a living, it's probably a good idea

Animation was an early feature, actually. It was called "MNG" and was developed alongside PNG. I don't know the details of why but it never really saw adoption outside of Firefox and was eventually removed even from there. AP

PNG went through that when Microsoft kept throwing incomplete and buggy support for it in IE. Hopefully something will come along to buck Chrome's monopoly and JPEG-XL will have its chance.
