The frequent posters on this site end up being boiled down to bullet-point caricatures based on what I remember from their posts. I guess yours would be: * Knows lots of technical details about security and cryptosystems. * Voice of reason

It's not necessarily intrusive just because it's running. I bet it's just swapped to disk and using ~0% of the CPU most of the time.

A gay man with a presentation throwing up a sculpted chest to make a point would not tell me that I'm not the expected audience. What if you were the only straight person in the room? Wouldn't you feel uncomfortable attending a Ruby talk

BTW, if anyone's interested in the whole topic of privilege, I strongly recommend taking a look at the "Helpful Resources" section over at the Border House: http://borderhouseblog.com/?page_id=54 I tick pretty much every privilege box the

Showing a nice ass on a slide is not a sign of male privilege. I strongly disagree. Seeing that image immediately tells any straight women or gay mean in the room that she or he is not the expected audience for the talk. The ideal audienc

Pocket Computer is the term that sprang to mind as well. Eventually we can drop the 'pocket' part when it becomes redundant. Alternatively, shorten it to PC.

My experience is that companies generally have the intention of playing fair and paying for all the licenses they need, but without any license protection enforcing it, nobody is going to keep an eye on how many people are actually using th

Something similar solved the problem for me too. I used to spend most of the day reading HN, reddit and other sites. I even remember a week last year where I sat at work for the required 40 hours and didn't get a single thing done. Now I so

That's certainly one way of looking at it. Last time I tried, I had no problem building x264 on Windows with Cygwin. The problem with Visual Studio is that it doesn't support C99, which x264 uses heavily. That suggests to me less of a hatre

If, like I did for several years, you rely on using the arrow keys instead of hjkl, disable the arrow keys in your vimrc. It found it incredibly painful for maybe a couple of days, but now using hjkl is like second nature. The efficiency im

It's been long enough since I regularly wrote C that I spent more time figuring out the old "struct vs typedef struct" issue than I did writing the reversing algorithm.

I've noticed a pattern every time any website launches a redesign: users immediately and vehemently dislike it; a couple of months pass; everyone looks back and wonders what the fuss was and would hate to go back to the old design. I seem t

Surely making the codec open source isn't in itself that interesting, considering that x264 and FFmpeg form a high quality, open source codec for H.264? It's not the code, but the spec that matters in spreading adoption of VP8. (Of course,

FWIW, not all parts of England are in counties either, so don't feel like you're being singled out. York isn't in Yorkshire, for example. It is its own unitary authority. Even Amazon demands a county, so I put North Yorkshire. Close enough.
