Generally, the more difficult problem is to design the power-sipping, energy-efficient cpu that runs on a battery with passive cooling, than the relative power hog that plugs into the wall and has active cooling.

I take your point, but the complexity I’m talking about is what remains after you’ve done any readily applicable simplifications. Any normal task has an inherent level of complexity (“add one” is a very simple task, so can be reduced do

Complexity is like energy, it cannot be created or destroyed, it is a fundamental property of any process or thing. However, complexity can be managed. Humans do this using abstraction as a tool. We divide the complex problem up into a sequ

I’ve just moved within Apple, and requisitioned a top-of-the-line MBP (my current one is from 2014, I used to use a Mac Pro in my old position). Even with a custom build to top spec, and with it being internal (ie: not customer), it was sti

Nope, none of that, at least imho. It’s a damn good Unix workstation, like I’ve been using for the last 30 years, and you get excellent commercial app support. That’s all that’s necessary for me.

For me, one of the prime drivers for how easy something is to grok, is how the formatting of the code lays out the logic within. He does a fair job with the last incarnation, but I’d go further than that. As he says, compilers are smart eno

I don’t have ADHD, I’m pretty laid back actually, but I don’t have a mind’s eye. I was 30 or so before I realised “the mind’s eye” wasn’t a metaphor, and people really could visualise things in their head. My brain doesn’t work like that, b

Cappuccino does this. Compare the speeds of the work-in-progress ( https://wip.laser-tags.net ) and the same site ( https://laser-tags.net ) after doing a ‘jake release’ which pulls the 90 or so files into a single .sj o

Oh it was pretty much a dedicated machine when it was burning a CD. This was a postgrad office, there were 4 of us (three called Simon...) and we had a Unix workstation each. Generally the PC sat in the corner and wasn’t really used. It had

I work at Apple. I’ve not reviewed the new guidelines but can confirm that yes, Apple do indeed let you take sick time to recover from an illness. Of course they do. In fact, the only time I ever had to interact with Apple HR about time off
